Image Optimization

GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Mac OS
OS Version: OSX Mavericks
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

How are you guys optimizing your images for the web?

I have THE MOST stubborn image on the planet!

It's only 72dpi 952x952 (.jpg) still i can't seem to get this durned image under 100kb without losing noticeable quality.

i've tried 'ImageOptin' and a few online image optimizers

Curious to know your thoughts

You need to install either
Save for Web plugin http://registry.gimp.org/node/33 or
RIOT http://registry.gimp.org/node/20778
I personally prefer RIOT plugin since it has more control options and does a batch processing (comes as standalone too)

Both suggestion by K1TesseraEna are good choices.
I'm not running Windows any more just be careful during install of RIOT. I might be wrong but I think I recall the installer is one of those offering other software as well.

Odinbc I'm actually on a Mac hopefully there's a version of these for Mac as well.

I didn't see the Mac thing, AFAIK, there's no MAC versions, sorry.
Only Linux and Win.

No problem , I have a windows VPS so i'll just upload the stand alone version of Riot there.

Hey Props to you K1TesseraEna,

I just made the optimization changes on my windows VPS/PC worked like a charm.
And the fact that it can do them in batches is awesome.

As bad as I hate to admit it sometimes alot of these PC apps STILL get the job done. Mac developers gotta step it up!

Now if only I can get the plugin in gimp on my Mac and i'll be set

P.S. do you know if the RIOT app. can optimize animated .gif files in batches and maintain the animation?

I've never tried to optimize gif animations with RIOT, I doubt it
can do further optimization beyond what's been already optimized in GIMP or PS but
it's worth a try to find this out.

I'm curious to know what kind of optimization you got done that you couldn't get done in Gimp. There are some possible optimizations in the JPEG standard but AFAIK they are available in the advanced options of the JPEG save dialog (in particular, chroma sub-sampling that can almost divide the file size by 2).

I use RIOT if i need a lower image weight. It has always worked excellent for me.

1. gimp doesn't show you immediately what the output file size is going to be
2. it doesn't optimize in batch mode.

For batch have a look at IrfanView. It's also a Windows program but if you can get RIOT to work on your Mac I'm sure you can use IrfanView. Another good program for batch is XnView (Windows/MacOSX/Linux) .

http://www.xnview.com I came across their site some months back (by way of an entirely different project and app of theirs...) and TOTALLY forgot about them . Good one bro. Gr8 reminder for me. As I will use this for a number of projects.

As for IrfanView and all other PC based software I try to use more some to run scripts and utilities I don't have to baby sit as my Windows PC is in the cloud on a VPS. Besides when it comes to graphics i'm more of a Mac man.

Still, all of these are great.
