This durn image wont desaturate for me, is there any reason why it wouldn't?

Can someone see if it works for them?

I guess you can just "Save Image As"

Appreciate it

because it's already desaturated?
maybe Color>Levels is what you need?

Hmmm... I thought desaturation stripped an image of all it's 'color' to a B&W image?

I've actually gone in and done somethings with contrast, but why wouldn't I be able to pull all of the color out via desaturation? I dont get it...

but it IS black and white already. You can use some of the color menu items to make it lighter or darker.

go to Window>Dockable dialogs>Pointer

Now move your mouse over the image: practically anywhere you point the RGB values are ranging
from 3,3,3 % [the darkest pixels] to 15,15,15 % [the brightest pixels] but they are (rgb values) always identical,
which means you have only different shades of gray. Means, nothing to desaturate :)

Try the same on colored image

Thought it can't be desaturated, it can be pressed. ;)

The image kind of explains itself.

if otherwhirl tries to follow that PS tutorial or your t-shirt tutorial Wallace
I think the next step on desaturated image is Color>Levels and move the sliders?

Image

to get this

That would work just as well.

@ lylejk

Lol... that's one way of doing it... but of course all of the folds and 'photo realism' all got zapped (which needs to be maintained...) with whatever nuke buttons you presssed :)

I think I found my answer with the fact that black is not considered a color in the graphics world, so as someone already stated it was already desaturated from the start.

Between the 'curves' & 'levels' options I was able to accomplish the goal.

I guess I just got caught up in wanting to follow the steps precisely just as I saw the way they were made in the original photoshop and and evem more so theexample Wallace created (thanks again Wallace :) )

In the end I get

On a similar note ... kind of, i DON'T get what i'm doing wrong that keeps producing a faintly translucent gray'ish background when I export my .png files on some images when i've followed all of the EXACT same steps (just as I had when i've made successful attempts and output images with transparent backgrounds... or so it seems)

*Notice the screenshots
(here's the actual exported .png '100% All Organic Red.png' 3 attachments is the limit here so had to upload to mediafire: https://www.mediafire.com/?x16ixfwru13v3wq)

Every layer I added an alpha channel and I used the fuzzy tool to create a transparent background.

So why are my exported images including the translucent gray'ish background you see in the image '100% All Organic Red.png'?

I have tried selecting a number of combinations including both with and without having selected the options "save color from transparent pixels" ,"save background color"

i even went back and retraced my steps with adding an alpha channel to each layer and I could see each layer had successfully done so.

Not sure why this is happening . As i said before i've done before several times with no problems.

I'm thinking that if you do and "alpha to select" and invert the selection, then clear the selection on all layers. This might remove this grayish color for the background.
Also, when you did the "fuzzy selection" removing background, some of the white background was left behind.
Often times it's a good idea to clear the layer more then once, to ensure that every bit of it is removed.

You said that you used the "fuzzy select tool" to remove the background from each layer. If with successive layers background being removed this way. Every time leaving this trace amount of the background still present in each layer.
Then I assume you added color to some if not all the t-shirts, before saving. Once saved, the saved images background would have a grayish semi-transparent background. Due to the mixing of all the other colors used for each t-shirt.

Also the displacement/bump-mapped layer could have also trace elements left in it's background.

You could have removed the background for your original t-shirt the same way, before duplicating it. Making sure that before you duplicate the original t-shirt with the background removed or transparent, that all traces of the background were actually removed.

Can you post the xcf file of this image, with all the layers as shown in your screenshot?

Black is both a color and a value. So is white and any shade along the greyscale. By desaturating you remove any other color except greyscale. That's why it leaves you with a BW image in the end. You can desaturate a BW image all day long and not get any results. But you can adjust values for very drastic differences. Hope that helps clearing the tech stuff up a little.
