Magnetic field / Magnetar

I never did one before, so please bear with me as this is the way it came to my mind as a first draw, I started with a blue #0000FF, not so happy with the resulting color, in the end I did put a layer above with the "Incandescent" gradient in Mode "HSV Hue" (just personal taste).
Let's get started
First I use the Ellipse select tool with the planet as reference for the junction above and below planet
symmetry mirror vertical activated to stroke the selectionEdit / Stroke Selection / Paint brush size 10 (only brushes works with symmetry, pencil, airbrush, etc...)

Then I did blur the strokes (Filters / Blur / Gaussian Blur...

Then I use the Recursive transform tool, moving each side toward center (inward) be sure the end result the central "cross" is in the center
Filters / Map / Recursive transform... Iteration > 3 "Paste Below" checked
DON'T click OK YET, but click the "+" button instead = A new controls appear pull them outward outside of the canvas, and like the first time be sure the end result the central "cross" is in the center

Then I just put the field below the planet and put Incandescent gradient HSV Hue above (just for my taste)

If you want to add thin lines inside the "vaporous" field, re-do all the very same steps, BUT this time
without Gaussian blur (and a thinner brush)
Artistically nice but in the real world this would be more like a sphere around the planet (the famous magnetic field shape we are all familiar with is really the intersection of the field for the magnet with the sheet of paper).
