So, to help a user on Gimpforums, I wrote ofn-symmetries.

The basic idea is simple:
- take a small square image
- Layer>Symmetries>Diagonal symmetry>{NE|NW|SE|SW} to symmetrize a corner
- Layer>Symmetries>Quadrilateral symmetry, applied several times in a row (at least twice), to make the pattern appear

Then take any picture, crop to a square, and play.

For instance, extracted from an infographic on battleships, the bow of the Richelieu, the "pagoda" of the Yamato, and the stern of USS Iowa:

This feature was missing in gimp. Wonderful addition to GIMP.

Thanks

Ended up with a transparent area in the middle. How do I stop that from happening?

think I figured out about the transparent area. "Don't have any to start with!"
Also the layer > swap > center and corners, removes it. Image

Stupid question, but here goes - just incase I'm not the only one.
To get the 4 corners do you just do this with one of the (ne, nw, se, sw)?
Or do you do one of each on the same picture.
I have found I can only do two at the most and the others don't do anything.
Quadrilateral I have worked out...Diagonal not.

I apply the diagonal symmetry only once. The trick is to finf the corner that will produce the most interesting result.

Yes ofnuts, I applied it in diagonal once and then played it in quadrilateral. It's funny. :tyspin :coolthup
