I just had a brain phart, and this is a result from said phart. Did use the Stipple program (not GIMP) for the dots (same one that I used for the TSP art recently). I first fed the image into G'MIC's Contours>Gradient Norm to get the white outlines on Black background before feeding that resulting template into the Stipple program (that was the Phart). Used Saul's cool Mean Fill Script-fu for the dot colorization. Still, the result won't be as posh as this guys results, but I have little patience to paint individual Dots, so, for a lazy man like me, it's acceptable; hopefully you all will find it so too. :)

Very cool looking, can I ask what it is supposed to be? Or just abstract?
Either way, it looks really cool man :D

Don't worry I think very few people here have the patience to make that many little dots.

Willy

Sorry I read the post and thought that was someone elses version of that where they drew all the little dots, by hand, which I really wouldn't comment about here... Sorry about that.

PC's right; glad you humoured my results with your comments Willy, but "close" is the wrong word I'm afraid. Still, I'm a tad closer then before. ;)

This is different, done with Pixelitor, but I liked the outcome. Again it is different, but you can change it from spheres to dots.

Maybe I'm just odd? This is one of mine, made up of a couple thousand dots, that I made with a sharpie.

Lyle, I was getting some really weird results with distance transform in G'MIC. Have you even tossed a PBM file into G'MIC to see what happens? Give it a shot, lol.

For whatever reason, the results in preview won't save to the image! GAH!

Stippling file made using dithering in GIMP, basically indexing the image at 1 color, and then reducing the number of dots by lightening the image (lowering opacity of the original image, is one method).

Big fan of stippling too Mahvin. Weighted Voronoi Stippling is just one form of it. Dithering using Floyd-Steinberg is another. I remember when I first started working in the offset printing business (didn't last long, but it flamed the passion that got me to where I am now) and doing research on all the dithering techniques. Ran across this cool article (same PDF article anyway; had to re-find it; lol) too. :)

We're not on the same wavelength, Lyle. I was explaining PBM to PC. I used the pbm in Concorde, etc. I used the same pbm file in G'MIC and got weird previews that won't translate to the image.

Ah; you know already that pbm is a bi-color (2 color indexed) format and I bet G'MIC don't like working in color spaces other then greyscale or higher bits. :)

This one's one of my favorites. Man, it just seems you could automate this, but alas I guess you can't do it. lol

Hey Lyle i thought i had a script to do something like this and among my very many i think i found it.I have looked and looked and can not find these python files anywhere on the net now.Nor could i find them at the registry for some reason. But they do alot according to what you are looking for.
Examples
Before using the magic mesh filter (a small dialog screenshot) - Python-FU/Create Layers/MagicMesh

Using the robot as an example:

Now with the robot image removed for clarity

I attached the pythons in a zip if any one is interested
Their are 3 files - MagicMesh3 SVG - MagicMesh2 mask - and reg MagicMesh

Then if you duplicate the dotlayer a bunch of times you can then add the original image on top set to hardlight-

You will find them in the menu here-

You can get some very interesting results playing with the sizes too. :)
