...any plans to me embedded videos here use HTML5 by default? Would be nice. Other sites now embed HTML5 as the default if the browser supports that. Just curious. :)

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. You can already embed any YouTube video here.

On a side note: I fixed the issue where "https" (default for YouTube now) wasn't working. GC members no longer have to remove the "s" in "https", when embedding a YouTube video.

That's cool Tux; still, for some reason, my browser's using Flash as the default player to play youtube videos. Elsewhere, it indeed uses HTML5 (as well as Youtube itself of course). Just curious. Flash is fine, but one day, I would like to remove the program. :)

Well, yeah. I'd like to remove flash from my system too. But, it's probably not gonna happen soon.

My understanding is that not all YouTube videos will play with an HTML5 video player. According to YouTube:

"Many YouTube videos will play using HTML5 in supported browsers."

All youtube videos at youtube's site plays in HTML5 by default now as far as I know Tux. I could be wrong of course. One day, though, I hope to rid my system of the flash virus vector. :)

The last time I installed Linux, before I installed flash, I tested YouTube. As YouTube stated in the link I provided, many videos did work without flash, but quite a few did not. That might have changed. I don't know.

Ok, removed the flash plug-in and all the videos on YouTube played fine for me in Firefox 36. Also located this article from January 28, 2015.

It appears to be as you say, flash is no longer required for any YouTube video. Personally, I hate flash and always have. I only wish that all sites would dump flash, but most streaming sites I visit still require it.

How do I remove flash from Fedora Tux? I use VLC for everything else.

I don't think you want to remove flash just yet, Molly. You will still need flash for viewing any embedded videos on here and on most other sites around the web. Some sites use flash for all kinds of things, not just videos.

I only removed it temporarily to test YouTube.

Yeah; keeping flash since there's sometimes some pretty cool SWF files (be careful of course) around. Just that, when folks share Flash videos at sites like GIMPChat, it will eliminate possible payloads if you know what I mean. Then again, if HTML5 is exploited, we are all in trouble. lololol

:)

edit:

Just checked at the off topic forum for some youtube videos; it still appears to require flash. I'm using a chrome variant (Iron) browser. Not sure if it's the browser or if the site itself will require some time for the transfer to HTML5. Time will tell. :)

Well, we have determined that since late January, YouTube's website doesn't require flash, but you have to actually be on YouTube, with a browser that supports HTML5.

Websites embedding YouTube videos will have to change their embed code to take advantage of YouTube's HTML5 support, with the main difference being that you must place the code in an iframe.

If you can't see the above video, your browser doesn't support HTML5 or have flash installed.

Unfortunately, at my end, it still routes to flash player. Strange. When I am at youtube's site, it definitely shows it using HTML5. :)

Try changing you flash setting to "never activate". It worked for me.
