Filters>Render>Pattern>Grid to create a rather thick grid on transparent background
Layer>Add layer mask and initialize with layer's alpha channel
Rotate the mask

Boom. Instant Alhambra-style mosaic.

Thanks Ofnuts, I used this tut and combined it with Beautify to get an instant aged effect.
