I've been playing in my sketch book, and yesterday I worked on some sketches to get a technique I liked using colored pencils and pastels. I've learned some stuff so far, I'm going to try with cheap colored pencils see what happens next. I'm calling them sketches since I see things that look finished and people call them sketches because they're not full works (I guess?).

All images aren't going to be true to actual color since I had to use a cellphone camera. D:


These two I didn't have any pencil sketch underneath, I just made it up as I went along...Which was somewhat terrifying but I made it work I think. Doing things this way makes you pray dear God don't let me ruin this it's coming out so nice! - These are only soft pastel.




These here had a sketch with a normal pencil first then I used colored pencils (prismacolor only) and soft pastels to color. - It seems if you put the waxy pencil first the pastel doesn't want to blend but if you put pastel first you can blend and detail better.



These also had a pencil sketch first and then I used oil pastels and colored pencils (prismacolor only). - With these the use of the waxy pencil over the oil pastel helps to blend (since I cannot use oil on 60lb sketch paper)...Which gives me an idea. I might try to use my colorless blender pencil on oil..see what happens.



I'll probably just make this my practice thread or something since I have an old thread from almost 2 years ago I used for painting. xD

Yes, why not they are very good.

I think the violet is my favorite, it's very real looking.

They are all good but I love the mushrooms.

I should be posting some more practices tomorrow! I'm thinking I might do another lighting challenge where I draw a similar thing and try lighting 3 different ways. My last one was done a year and a half ago surly my concept of light has improved by now.



That's my personal favorite too! I followed in a book how to draw the violet but I didn't follow how to color it....I modified it a little though, in the book the leaf was pointing the other way but I had no room that way so I flipped it so it's not the exact same drawing as in the book. xD




Mushrooms for the win!

These are pastel, colored pencil, and ink last. I sketched with a normal pencil and/or a mechanical pencil.

Birds:
I followed 2 tutorial on drawing birds and colored using my own developing technique.



Horses:
I did these out of attempt of guessing and memory.



It seems cheaper pencils are just as hard to blend over as good ones. But going over the pastel works pretty well...interesting...


I drew some cats today but I'll upload those later when I have more to post...

The apple and pear I think are both soft pastel and colored pencils. Other stuff is a sharpie pen.

This is more like a painting than a sketch but I was practicing so I guess it counts.
I followed a tutorial in a book for drawing the Cosmo, the rose is just how I draw a rose....Lol
My watercolor pencil skills almost ruined this, I just took over it with raphael watercolors instead and went with it. LOL - Watercolor, white pen, pencil for sketching, kneadable eraser.

I bought some books on how to draw animals, 4 for 18 dollars to me that's a steal and I love them! Here's what I did with the books today.

Sketched with pencil, inked with a pilot pen and a sharpie, and colored with soft pastels.

Okey Dokey! More stuffs! Been a few weeks so..yep...

Okay this is an actually drawing more than a practice but I never drew ballet slippers on their own before (that I can remember anyway) and I was doing Colored Pencils and baby oil. I also inked it with a brown fine-line pen...but you can't really see it, but that's okay I like it like that. xD

I was basing the coloring by how he looked in the book. I don't know if the colors are actually accurate or not, though.

moko: you are developing all the time and just going from great to better! i have never heard of using baby oil in paintings, but since i have some at home i will definitely try it i'm learning so much from your experiments, sister!

erisian and i both instantly loved the girl on the elephant - what is it you don't like about it? i think it looks like your animal drawings are coming on nicely all of them, i'm particularly fond of the elephants and the goat because they have so much of the moko style about them. the watermelon is very good too, nice texture to it.

surprisingly enough (since i'm such a fan of hard outlines) i liked the soft brown outlining in the ballet slipper picture, it suited the general style of the picture. i don't know what ballet slippers you used for a model and i'm certainly no expert on ballet slippers, but they look a little too soft to me. wouldn't they have to be rather stiff to give enough support for ballet dancing?

Okay so I tried another lighting challenge, I don't know how good the lighting part came out but I liked how the different media's look in the challenge. This time instead of all the same media I did a different one for each lighting direction. - Last time I did the lighting challenge I did a potted plant, this time I did a hat. Don't ask why a hat but I picked out a hat.

As usual lousy quality.





I also drew a clown. This is watercolor and washable marker. Inked with random pens.









I had a more elaborate idea in my head for the girl on the elephant, and the colors of her clothes blend too much in to the blanket on the elephant, and some other random reasons.

The ballet slippers, probably are too stiff. I was just making it up as I went along.




Everyone but me likes this drawing. xD

mokonafan: nice job on that lighting challenge, i remember the pot plants and the feedback you got on that, it seems you've become more confident with lighting since . the clown is so lovely and cuddly, the true moko mark of quality!

I followed a few Mark Crilley Tutorials over the weekend.

1 was of how to Draw Baymax from Big Hero 6 (I LOVE BAYMAX ), the other 2 were of mouths since my mouths are always flat looking. I'm not used to drawing black and white (gray-scaled) drawings so this was quite a challenge. Of course his looked 50X better than mine but I'm happy with the results!

2 different HB #2 pencils, one was cheaper than the other so the darkness levels were different, black prismacolor pencil, kneadable eraser (normal erasing and highlights), cotton-swabs (for blending)



One thing I has learned though is working in gray-scale can be done in color if I use pastels since they rub well unlike colored pencil which is more waxy.





The lighting challenge was fun for the most part. It didn't turn out really how I wanted but it was interesting to do anyway.
