Way too lazy for a tut, but basically, ran Isophotes to create a selection, fed selection into Rob's Mosaic helper, then stroked resulting path (1500x spacing) and saved as a PBM file (important; possibly could convert as 2-bit, but haven't tried). Re-open PBM and convert to RGB color. Run Skeleton preset (this time quick method), then invert result. Used the Isophotes outlines but make them all dark. Merge. This is your mask for the mosaic. Added Local Orientation for relief effect and added grout too. :)

edit:

Tried to convert 2-bit instead; not the same. The PBM step is critical. :)

Thanks. Appears complicated, Pat, but once I figured it out, it's actually pretty easy. Again, the save as PBM step is critical. Tried to just reduce colors by mode, but it caused some of the dots to disappear. :)

Reducing the point spacing of the stroke from 1500 to 800 yields a more brick like result. :)

Now, experimenting with adding simple geometric shapes (this time, just circles) to the mix. :)

Thanks Isabella. You do know that if you are center-brained, that's a sign of insanity, right. lololol

Which mosaic, Issabella?

Anyway, thought I would play with different paths (radial for the leaves) with this one. :)

As you know Lyle, Dinasset since a long time is looking for a nice mosaic filter (w/o external calls, inside Gimp +G'MIC. From time to time he experiments some new filters and sometimes he asks my cooperation for testing. (He has mentioned that in his released filters). I used one of those not-complete or released filters, which I found in one of my folders. But nothing available yet. After playing it, I played with layer modes and opacities at my taste.
I love your last outcome, it's really beautiful :bigthup :clap

Thanks for the info Issabella. This mosaic was all done using both GIMP, Script-fu (RobA's Mosaic helper), and G'MIC (convert the dots to bricks via quick Skeleton; also used Local Orientation for relief as well as dcci2 to resize it bigger). The cool thing about Skeleton (quick) is it's almost like a Voronoi (converts dots to polygons) convertor (not quite but almost). :)

very interesting info, Lyle.
I don't remember RobA's mosaic helper, where do I find it?

quick try, but no chance to understand how to go from the lines created by RobA to the mosaic squares/bricks (I don't see such an effect as produced by G'MIC skeleton).

It's a matter for your creativity and youth...I'm too old, my neurons are shrinking and diminishing...

(I give up, unless some time in the future you have time and patience to post a detailed tutorial, the "quick" steps you mentioned are not enough for my current brain ...)

This time, I used gfig to create the star in order to create the paths to run 2 passes of mosaic helper for this result. :)
