Thank you iarga. I don't do anything special for getting info under picture. When I open to examiner... add the file I choose the item and the information goes with the picture. :)

Iarga, if I may express a personal opinion, your image of dawn is "technically" well done and nice, but it needs some intervention to get a "personality"

Iarga,
Fantastic job on the fresco!
If you use the "Full Editor" for your replies, you will find at the bottom of it where you can browse on your computer for a file. You then tell it to upload the file and it will appear with the file-name underneath and will also add the number of times the file has been viewed.

dinasset,

As you said, Issabella was definitely the winner with the street view of yours!

I really like your 2nd version of dawn - you can almost feel the freshness of the air, knowing in a few minutes that there will be hot sunlight!

I fear I am not going to be able to compete with the fantastic results I have seen on these two photographs of mine.

David please, enter in the game with your nice results too. We all are learning and getting ideas and new methods to apply on photos. I love seeing all of the results each one with its nuance and atmosphere. :)

Thank you all for your comments and advise. Dinasset, I hope my next dawn interpretation has more personality. ;)

I used an image from Wim Strijbosch on Wikipedia: Jinn in theme park "De Efteling" in the Netherlands

An attempt at the fresco - nothing special - just brought out the colours and a bit of retouching.
The dawn picture, I am waiting for inspiration!!!

In the wall painting there is a lot of vignetting. Is there a script in GIMP or in G'MIC to remove an illumination gradient? Sometimes it is called "gradient removal", "background subtraction" or "flatten illumination". In astronomy photography and electron microscope image processing, gradient removal is a basic procedure. In this case it would be usefull also to remove the vignetting.

G'MIC filter "Equalize shadow" does something like this, but are there more possibilities?

Iarga,

Your question about vignetting made me go back and look at the original prints. The photographs were taken many years ago on 35mm film. None of the other photographs, taken on the same occasion, with the same lens, show any vignetting.

I think that one part of the wall is naturally lighter and also it was illuminated by an open door directly opposite, but as you say, it looks exactly like vignetting.
When I am in Kefalonia, at the end of July, I shall have to go into the church if only to check!

When I use UFRAW for the downloads from my digital camera, it applies corrections from the Lensfun database, which in the case of my lenses includes vignetting.

Iarga, you answered with a joke, hope you didn't feel offended by my comment, if I used the term "personality" it's because English is not my native Language, what I wanted to say is that IMHO any interpretation (not to use the term "enhancement" which sometimes can be not suitable) should be ... a "personal" combination of colours, scene, etc to reflect a "personal" interpretation of the image...sorry.

Dinasset, I don't feel offended at all. I understood you well. English is also not my native language. Above that, I love literal jokes. So I hope that you are not offended by my little joke.

I now found a very good filter to even the illumination. G'MIC filter "Tone enhance" (Details folder) is the way to go. It was already one of my favorite filters.

So for the second attempt of the wall painting: G'MIC "Tone enhance" to even almost all the uneven illumination (very small detail enhancement now). Thereafter G'MIC "Freaky details" with amplitude 4, scale 68.3, 2 or 3 itterations RGB[all]. Then a little bit color balance. Thats all I used.

good finding !
as you have seen, the "equalization" of the shadows is perfect, but the problem is in the original source: as in many cameras the shadows have a different "hue" and this "emerges" if lightened as by the G'MIC algorithm.

David explained it was not vignetting. In this case it has to do with the painting and the exposure/illumination.
Yes, the Hue is different. Maybe the "Tone enhance" filter changes the hue also?

when flatting the illumination this way, the histogram becomes small. So it's destructive. If you stretch the histogram after removing the illumination gradients, then other artefacts will appear. For me, with the wall painting, my goal was to expose as much details as I could, like a little forensic investigation :cool . For a pretty picture, it needs other photo editing, but I am not an artist. :(

Iarga,
Your "forensic investigation" has produced great results (and introduced me to the Tone enhance filter).
The result looks artistic to me - perhaps a small crop at the top and left would remove the distorted colours?

dinasset,
Still no inspiration for the "dawn" picture, so I have cheated!
I have taken two of yours and combined them - I hope you don't mind.

david.

David, almost all Garagecoders G'MIC filters are special. The last months there are no new filters made by Garagecoder. I hope Garagecoder is working on new filters and that we will see something new soon. Above all I hope everything is well with him.

G'MIC is fun and serieus stuff. There is serieus competition between French universities and sometimes we can benefit from the effects. There are some "state of the art" filters in G'MIC.

iarga, you got a very good result on the wall painting. I like how good you removed the natural vignette effect. :bigthup
David, I find your result beautiful. :bigthup
Here I leave you all new pics. :)

Issabella,

Two more beautiful photographs. The chair back is wonderful, I had to try to make that stand out! The picture through the archway I may do again - I haven't got the result I want.
(I have scaled the photographs to 2000 x 1500.)

Second attempt at the view. I have tried to get more impact and use the archway as a frame to lead the eye into the picture.
Successful or not?

I was tempted again...
For the second image posted I did a simple "interpretation":
- new transparent layer
- filled with gradient Yellow Orange, with shape Square
- set to multiply
- flatten
Here the outcome:

it looks quite intersting, doesn't it?
