Oh, well it's working on the first part of mapping the object. When that's finished, I'll start over with the Text side of the coin upside-down.

Edge ring is the right size now, though.

*sigh* I flipped the text layer so that it was upside down, now Wilber and the text are both upside down. :gaah

O,

You are using Wilber for the Top cap face in Map Object and Gimp Talk for the Bottom correct? Just making sure. Did some testing here, and with Wilber right side up and "Gimp Talk" upside down, after applying Math Map, they are appearing right side up.

Yes, I moved Wilber to the top layer on this go-around, and moved the flipped layer below Wilber. It's working its magic as I type here.

I've attached my zipped coin and bg layers.

O,

I downloaded your zipped XCF file.

When you flip the text layer upside down (from it's right side up position), you have to use the Flip Tool to flip it first Vertically and then Horizontally. Then apply it as the Bottom cap in Map Object.

Hopefully these details we are going through will help others fill in the missing blanks from my explanation to successfully do this as well.

Thanks for your persistence in trying this.

:)

Well now I'm thinking that the text layer should be flipped vertically for the first 30 layers, then flipped horizontally for layers 31-60. As you can see, layers 17-30 are mirrored horizontally (those layers shouldn't be flipped horizontally).

I don't know what's wrong with the edges ... they're not working right either.

I think I need to start from scratch and do a completely new coin. I want to try a copper one anyway.

Tomorrow ...

O,

Which method did you attempt? The GAP method, which involves using Move Path and the Frames Modify functions, or the one using two thirty layer images and applying Filter All Layers? That might help in diagnosing the problem. I used GAP completely to achieve my results. I wrote up the idea for doing it semi-manually with Filter All Layers based on my GAP work. I will try a test using Filter All Layers to see if there is a difference in my results, just in case.

I followed your GAP tutorial. No other methods.

I'll add a little more detail.

First, you always have open your parts.xcf image. That is the one with the parts you will be using to make the coin, the Wilber layer, the "Gimp Chat" layer (flipped vertically and horizontally as I mentioned before), and the ridged side wall layer.

Open a 400x400 (if that is the size you are using) square image with a Transparent Background.

Name that background_000001.xcf.

Use Duplicate Frames to make 59 more duplicates, giving a total of 60 frames.

Use Move Path to add in the 400x400 ridged side wall layer. Make sure when adding the ridged side wall layer you are using a Step Mode of None.

After doing that, do a Frames Modify. In the Dialog window that opens, set From Frames to 1 and To Frames to 30.

Click on the Function button, select Apply Filter on Layer(s)

In the dialog that opens, select Map Object and click the Apply Varying Button.

In the Options Tab, set Transparent Background, Map To Cylinder.
In The Light Tab, select No Light.
In The Cylinder Tab, leave the Radius at it's default value. Change the Length to 0.03.
For the Top Cap select your Wilber Layer. For the Bottom Cap, select the "Gimp Chat" Layer.
In The Orientation Tab set the X Rotation Value to 90.0 degrees. Leave the Z Rotation Value at 0.0 degrees.
Click OK.

Map Object processes the first frame.

A little Continue Dialog comes up, just click on Continue.

Map Object will reopen for you. The only adjustment you need to make the rest of the time is the Z Rotation value. No other values need to be adjusted. Now make the Z Rotation value 174.0 degrees. Click OK.

Map Object will process frame 30.

If a Continue dialog opens again, click Continue.

Then Map Object will creates tweens for frames 2 through 29 (it already did frames 1 and 30).

Once that is finished, again do a Frames Modify.

This time, set your From Frames value to 31, and To Frames value to 60 in the Frames Modify Dialog window.

Click on the little Function button and select Apply Filter on Layer(s)

Select Map Object in the dialog that opens, and click the Apply Varying Button.

Map Object opens. Change the Z Rotation value to -180.0 degrees. Note the minus sign here. Click OK.

Map Object creates frame 31.

If a Continue Dialog opens, click Continue.

Map Object opens again. This time change the Z Rotation value to -6.0 degrees. Click OK.

Map Object creates frame 60.

If a Continue Dialog opens, click Continue.

Map Object creates for frames 32 through 59 (31 and 60 were done at each of the previous two settings of -180.0 degrees and -6.0 degrees.)

If all went well, you can now run Frames To Image at this point.

I think you will be able to proceed from there.

Hope these added details help some.

:)

I don't know what I was thinking of when I posted the zipped file above. Must have been tired. Here is the zipped file I really meant to attach.

The other one has been deleted.

This attachment has three layers in it - the front and the back of the coin and the striped background.

:wh

I did it! :faint

I started from scratch and carefully went through the GAP tutorial again.

I need to work more on the lettering and Wilber but just had to post my results.

The PDF file of the tutorial has been updated with the helpful notes ccbarr added. I attached the updated file in the first page of the thread and added it here, too.

Something a little different. I changed the radius in the cylinder settings to 0.45 and the thickness to 0.05. I used the GAP spinning coin tutorial for the rest.

I don't recommend doing this because it took very close to 3 hours of processing time by the time it was finished. It used 52% of my 2gb of RAM and my processor was practically constant at 61% usage.

Thank you Molly. I'm having a bit of fun with the tutorial now that I've gotten a little experience with it.

Very impressive O.

I'm here making my own elliptical shaped one as well, to try out your idea. Yeah, it's taking a while to process here too.

I've got another idea to add to this mix. Imagine the lettering having a sparkle animation added to it, so we get spinning and sparkling all in one fun animation. Adding a sparkle effect would require more work (and probably greatly increase the processing time too). However, I think a reasonable compromise can be done by using the Map Object Box instead of the Cylinder. I would adjust the box dimensions to be a thin box, have my lettering on the front and back, have a blank transparent layer for the top and bottom of the box and use a layer on the sides that would make it look like a thin strip is holding the front and back together. I think it would take less processing time.

Anyhow, very creative result there O.

:)
