Hey guys,

I'm designing a personal gaming playmat. I haven't made a lot of artwork on GIMP, and I'd love your expert advice and critique.
I spent most of yesterday trying to add a bit of a battlefield to the left of the picture. Could probably do with a little more work, but I'm wondering if it might be worth omitting it. The level of difficulty may be beyond my skills.

- Does anything look out of place?
- Are there any techniques I should look into in order to improve it?
- Should I omit the battlefield? Should I add to it?
- What else would improve this artwork?

The artwork will be made into a magic the gathering gaming mat by inkedgaming. Hence the "life counter" numbers on the left. They also require a .5inch of "safe space" around the border which may or may not be omitted from the final mat.

You may not have thought about the symbolism represented here. You have coloured forms of the hallucinogenic amanita mushroom, similar to the 'Alice in Wonderland' theme. Then there are some zombie mech-warrior images as well as what looks like dead crusaders.
Given the crusades were wars based on theology, and a lot of theology is the result of alleged hallucinogenic experiences, then you could guess at what is actually the dominant form of imagery here. Don't forget, these images slip into the subconscious helping to form your present psyche? :funnyball

Wow, thanks!
I hadn't considered all that, but I might try push that theme now. The picture is based on the old dos game, Hocus Pocus. Of course, all of the artwork there is 16 bit pixel art, so had to make my own from scratch. I made the mushrooms on inkscape based on scenes from the games. The corpses are cut from old oil paintings. And that is indeed a yellow brick road :D

Actually you doing pretty good with this. I've used some clips from dos platform games as part of a video I made. Saving a dos video sequence was interesting. What you do with your art work is kinda secondary but a mouse pad is as good as any. You would just print it out I guess with a color printer? :paint
