In USA they have a ceremony and a a coming of age party celebrating a teenager's 16th birthday "Sweet sixteen". Similar celebrations are found in different cultures around the world, such as the "Quinceañera" in hispanic countries and the "Festa de debutantes" in Brazil, both at 15 years of age. Much like a wedding, this event can be formal, casual, or semi-formal.

Not all countries have any celebrations at all, or it could be to do with the resources available at the time. I know I didn't anyhow.

I think that it's currently a party celebrated in South America countries.
When I was "a quinceañera" it wasn't celebrated and I don't know it was celebrated before either. Perhaps it was in my Grandmother's time as a start to the adult society
