Hello Everyone: I am having problem with GIMP not recognizing newly installed fonts. I download and install the font - by default it installs in the Windows system font library (C:\Windows\Fonts), and it is recognized by other programs. However, GIMP does not find it, even after refreshing the fonts list and restarting GIMP. I have the GIMP font libraries defined as follows:



It is only when I move the font to the C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\fonts library that GIMP will find it.

This is a fairly recent problem - I have installed fonts in the past, and GIMP has always found them without having to move them to one of the GIMP font libraries. I am running Windows 10 Home (Version 1809/Build 17763.316) and GIMP 2.10.8.

Is this a known problem with either GIMP or Windows?

Hi Tony,
Did you try putting the fonts in the 2nd folder that you show,

C:\Users\Tony Nahon\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\fonts?

You only mention Windows Fonts & Program Files\Gimp....

Put the fonts in your appdata\roaming folder & then open Gimp....

I wonder why you have C:\Windows\Fonts added in the preferences list.
AFAIK Windows font folder is configured to load automatically in the fonts.conf file:
<dir>WINDOWSFONTDIR</dir>

As far as putting the fonts in the C:\Users\Tony Nahon\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\fonts folder, no I haven't tried that. My thinking in moving the font to the C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\GIMP\2.0\fonts folder is that it is at a more 'global' level and would not restrict the font to a specific user. But I am wondering why I should have to move the font anywhere other than where it is naturally installed i.e. C:\Windows\Fonts.

Why have I specified C:\Windows\Fonts in the Font Folders Preferences list? While I was trying to find a solution to this situation, I found this post (https://superuser.com/questions/637665/gimp-does-not-see-windows-fonts/637668) which suggested explicitly adding this entry; however, it made no difference.

Most of those suggestions are for gimp 2.8....

2.10.8 handles files slightly different which require the use of the appdata\roaming location...

Try copying into the C:\Users\Tony Nahon\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\fonts folder...then you can also have a separate font location for other programs if that's the route you want to go....

Copy your fonts first, before you open Gimp...

Hi FlutteringBy: Thanks for your suggestion. I tried it, and yes, it does work - if I copy the font to the ...AppData/Roaming/etc directory, GIMP will find it. However, I am still not clear on why I should have to do this. The GIMP 2.10 documentation states:

Windows. The easiest way to install a font is to drag the file onto the Fonts directory and let the shell do its magic. Unless you've done something creative, it's probably in its default location of C:\windows\fonts or C:\winnt\fonts. Sometimes double-clicking on a font will install it as well as display it; sometimes it only displays it. This method will make the font available not only to GIMP, but also to other Windows applications.

I understand this to mean that installing the font at the Windows system level should be enough for GIMP to find it. But this is not happening on my system - newly installed fonts are found by other programs, but not by GIMP.

Any thoughts on why this doesn't work for me?

Tony, I had the opposite problem. All of my Windows-installed fonts were showing up in GIMP, and I didn't want them to (way too many). You may need to check your fonts.conf file, as described in the following post, but do the opposite (make sure the line is present).

Hi enxio27: Thanks for your reply and the reference to the other post.

The font.conf file does contain the <dir>WINDOWSFONTDIR</dir> parameter, but this still does not cause GIMP to find newly installed fonts. Removing this setting predictably causes none of the C:\Windows\Fonts to show up in the GIMP fonts list - only fonts added to folders specified in GIMP Preferences -> Font Folders are included.

I appreciate your suggestion, but it's still a mystery.

I have the same problem. I have newly installed fonts and gimp isn't reading them. My folder is here:


Can I add the folder to gimp preferences and have gimp recognize it that way?



Also, what is the point of having 2 font folders for gimp?

Hi mackenzieh: I tried what you are suggesting i.e. adding the Windows System Fonts folder (C:\Windows\Fonts) to the GIMP Preferences => Folders => Fonts list, but it did not help. I continue to experience the issue - I added a font the other day and the only way I could get GIMP to pick it up was to copy it to one of the other folders specified in the Preferences list.

You are correct, adding the Windows System Fonts folder does nothing. It still doesn't make sense as to why the two gimp folders are reading fonts while the systems folder can't.

I had to copy the fonts to one of the gimp font folders. They now show up.
