I have an image showing the top of a planet, made by yours truly.
I intend to bring it to kuula.co to make a Tiny Planet with it as it is explained here:
https://blog.kuula.co/tiny-planets-instagram/

I did try the Tiny Planet plug in in Gimp, it's not bad. But Kuula seems to do a better job (I hate to say).
The best Open Source software I know is a mobile app called Tiny Planet Maker. The thing is, I need a transparent background, and this app only exports to JPGs :(

Thanks guys

Not so much a recommendation as a possibility. The old MathMap plugin -> miniplanet filter

Mmm...
I do not see the "MathMap" directory, neither the "miniplanet" filter.
The closest I got to that was "Map" directory, the "Little Planet" filter.
But it seems the results from kuula.co are considerably better :(

I did notice a filter to make Panorama Projection, in the same directory. But I am not sure this is what I need.

Maybe I'll just stick to the Little Planet filter...

Thank you rich2005 :)

It is an old third party plug-in. Plenty of references around if you search.

example: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4558&p=231024&hilit=mathmap#p231005

However, maybe best left until plenty of experience using GIMP.

Thank you so much for the link and the valuable advise rich2005 :)

Would you say I could expect better results from miniplanet than those from Little Planet?

I am always vary wary about this-is-better than that. All in the eye of the beholder. I would hang on and wait for more input from forum members. There might be something better.

A comparison. Strange that one is clockwise the other anti-clockwise.

I have always done this kind of thing with `Filters>Distorts>Polar coordinates`. Must be the math buff in me.

Hi drpeppercan,
As rich says MathMap can make minplanets (I did some animated ones here)
Nobody has been able to get the newer version of MM working under Windows unfortunately.

The technique ofnuts mentioned is in a tutorial video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j06DahjMQq0
That tutorial got me started on miniplanets.

There is "Hugin" you can download from SourceForge. There are some YouTube videos to help. I have seen it but not used it. Also, I don't know if it works in Gimp 2.10.

Pat is right about Hugin. Whats worth knowing is that for miniplanets you don't need a huge 360degree panorama. You just need a landscape-style image where the RHS is a mirror of the LHS. The video link I posted above shows how to do this. :)

Try and see if the filter "Little Planet" in Map, is available. In Gimp 2.10.8 it's located here: Filters>Map>Little Planet. Hope that helps.

You might want to watch this tutorial on Tiny planets. It is made by Jan, from Gimp Workshop. This was his last tutorial. I love the effects he used to finish up the image. Ella posted this on GL. Jan died recently.

Thanks for posting that great tutorial Pat625. I realized you could make 'inverted miniplanets' while playing with MathMap, but I never thought of combining them with a regular miniplanet. Sad he has passed away. :(

I remember someone wrote a script for this as well. I believe it was pan 360. Can't remember the author though. Lyle uses this script a lot. But the script bends panoramas up to 360 degrees.
Actually the filter name is pan to bow.
