Hi All,

First off, thanks to lylejk for finding my obscure code!! This was basically a dead SourceForge project. I realize this isn't the easiest thing to use. I kind of did it for myself and thought I might share it... so you get what you pay for, I guess.

A quick comment based on scanning this thread. I had another user who got this to work in Linux without using Wine. Here's what he did:

1. Install FreeImage library with the devel package.
2. Unpack the zip file
3. To compile, in dir src:
gcc -c -O2 *.cpp
gcc -Wl -lm -lc -lfreeimage *.o -Wl -o poincare
4. In dir example, the paths and file names need to be converted from Windows to Linux. The lines:
infile=../example/rocket_orig.jpg
outfile=../example/rocket_poincare.jpg
need to be chagned to reflect that the directory delimiter is / on Linux instead of \, and the jpg needs to be lowercase, matching the rocket_orig.jpg file name that is in the zip file.
5. Change dir to example, and to run:
../src/poincare ../example/render.txt
6. That's it, I successfully rendered the example picture on Linux!

Please feel free to give me some feedback. And, post your images to the Flickr Poincare group if you are a Flickr member:

<a href= "http://www.flickr.com/groups/poincare/"><img src=http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2507/buddyicons/[email protected]?1248913226; alt="Poincaré"/></a>
Seen in <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/poincare/">Poincaré</a>.

Thanks again for everyone's interest!!

Wow; appreciate your comments here Bill. I actually discovered your gem a few months ago and wanted to do better with it and it finally dawned on me how to get it to work in my mind's eye. I'll join your group, but I'm no Manny by the way. His stuff is awesome to say the least. :)

It looks great, I just get annoyed with many of the command line programs. Over the years I have become a fan of a good GUI.

I posted your request at Bill's Flickr PM; still, it's probably outside the scope for this time of program. He did reply that he really wants to release an update to his cool code sometime this summer though. :)

Boy; you all just have lack of imagination (just kidding). lol

The fun is to try something, wait 2 (or more) minutes and see if what you tried worked or not. lol

Just a poke; have to do so once in a while. ;)

Thanks so much Bill! I sincerely appreciate that information.

A couple of corrections for paths in the render.txt and command line usage:

1. in render.txt the correct path for the example directory will be:

infile="example/filename.jpg"
outfile="example/filenameout.jpg"

2. For command line usage the syntax will be (I need to find Bob's instructions on how to avoid this step - but until then the command line entry is):

./poincare render.txt

I love surprises myself, although the GUI will likely speed up my eyecandy like or dislikes.

I went through this whole thread and must have missed it. Where are the files rhinobell mentions? Links?

I did at first too Rod. The trick is to run the settings with the mask option. This gives you a white triangular image that can be used as a template to create your target for feeding to the full rendering script. :)

see the action entry; normally it is set to render:

# Common Parameters
p=4
q=5
jpegQuality=100

# create visible mask
infile=..\\example\\ptest.jpg
outfile=..\example\\ptestmask.jpg
action=mask

# Fundamental Region Parameters
px=300.0
py=330.0
rx=50.0
ry=330
maskColor=black

# Render Parameters
renderedSize=360
borderSize=4
supersamplingRate=4
perturbationFactor=0
outOfBoundsColor=white
unreachableColor=white
nonSourceColor=red
maxIterations=20
negate=false

Sounds like you found the files you need....

Also sounds like a real GUI would make this way more usable. Maybe I'll put this on my list of things to do this summer. Given this is a GIMP group, I suppose a GIMP plug in would be preferable. A Windows GUI would be a hell of a lot easier, though (maybe).

Any programmers out there who would like to help????

Path of least resistence I say Bill; unless some GIMP guru can help you out that is with a GIMP GUI. I'm use to stand-a-lones; trust me. lol

I appreciate whatever cool result (even if it is a command prompt version) personally. GUI would be nice though. :)

I PM'ed Bob about adding the directory path to the environment file, per this comment I made earlier:
Quote:
2. For command line usage the syntax will be (I need to find Bob's instructions on how to avoid this step - but until then the command line entry is):

./poincare render.txt

Bob recommended I use the export option, as the example shows in the code below:
Quote:
export PATH=$PATH:<add new path here>

replacing <add new path here> with the actual list of directories you want included.

IMPORTANT! - make sure you include the '$PATH' portion as that simply completes to all of the directories you already have in your path.

So if you leave out '$PATH' and just enter the one you want, all others will be gone (not the directories...just their inclusion in PATH).

After that all new entries you want need to be separated by a colon (without any spaces between colons and entries). For example:
Code:
export PATH=$PATH:/mahvin/blah:/mahvin/blah/blah
would add the directories /mahvin/blah and mahvin/blah/blah to the end of the existing path.

Hope this helps. If you still have problems, let me know.

By adding the PATH to the location where the poincare binary resides, you will no longer have to use ./ when calling the poincare binary in terminal.

Now that I have added the PATH, all I do is cd to the poincare directory and type:

poincare render.txt

Thanks to both Bill (for Poincare) and Bob for his help with the PATH variable.
