Why do you need privacy when you have nothing to hide?

I don't have anything to hide Willy; I just value privacy. Obviously, there is little of that when you are online, but still, I do cherish anonymity when I can take it. Glad I'll never be famous.

Do you have curtains in your home?

Of course, but they're rarely closed...

The last time I visited my parents, I noticed something very odd about a nearby house. After a while I realized they had absolutely no curtains or blinds whatsoever. There was no sign of them even being installed. They were well-to-do (obviously I could tell), so it wasn't like blinds were out of their budget.

Why then? If you're not doing anything wrong, you don't need curtains, right?

Would you be OK if the police showed up at your house and wanted to do random searches of your home, as well as full body searches of you and your family? If you have nothing to hide, you should be OK with that too, right?

So as you can see, it's just not that simple to use the "If you have nothing to hide" argument.

The reason I would if someone in a creepy van pulls up is because they are doing something wrong, and I don't want them doing something "wrong" with me.

and that would be bothersome if the police showed up and just searched the house, but they shouldn't be doing that either, as it is part of the law, that they can't. So I don't need to protect myself from them.

I love and require my privacy which is why I never include any private info about myself online.

I basically do not like Facebook or Myspace or any other social group because there is generally too much false gossip.
Seen it too much with my kids having those site groups.
I did join Myspace but only to join Shepherds Chapel group there.
Joined Facebook to try and win a guitar - didn't win by the way. :\ <--- sad face

Anyways i just see way too much gossip on those sites.

But back to your initial question, if you are not doing anything wrong and have nothing to hide, why shouldn't they be able do it? Why do we even have those laws and why don't we just change them?

I see this was split from somewhere else, but regarding privacy:

The more frequently you leave your curtains open (house curtains and electronic ones), the more likely someone's going to see what you've got and do something "wrong" with it.

Most people are good and they won't do anything if they know your full name or your address or your bank account info, et cetera. But it only takes one bad person to really make things unpleasant for you, and while there are lots of decent people around, there are lots of bad ones too. It's not impossible and actually happens every day. There's probably someone reading this who wishes they'd been more private in the past...

"Bad" or "wrong" doesn't necessarily mean going into your home and doing bad/wrong things, or stealing your identity and doing bad/wrong things with it. If someone knows enough about you, they could give the info to someone else (which leads to SPAM or worse), they can harass you, and generally be a nuisance. They don't need a good reason to do this, they just need your info.

Close your curtains! And if you like everything hangin' out there, fine, but don't criticize those who don't.

My sentiments exactly. If I want friends, I am certainly not going to go there to look for them. Don't like Facebook, never have, never will.... I hear some people bragging how many friends they have on Facebook. Hey, Get Real... PERIOD......

It's amazing that myspace was purchased for $580 million only a few years ago and recently sold for $35 million. I guess success on the internet can be short lived and ever fleeting.

I use facebook for professional reasons and to stay in touch with family
problems arise when people play games and let 3d party apps access their info. I NEVER do that.

I have keys to my house. that's because I want to make it difficult for criminals to get in.
I use the same street smarts when online

Maybe Facebook will go down with it.... Just a matter of time.
