Bucket fill white comes out as grey

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 10
GIMP Experience: Experienced User

Bucket fill fills with grey and not the selected white. Also brush paints grey in the same way.
Image is in RGB mode.
Any suggestions?

What colour is your canvas to start with and is your bucket fill colour at 100% opacity?
I did it over a black canvas with a low opacity and it came out grey

If it become gray, usually it's because your image is in grayscale, but you said that RGB is checked, look at the Mode of your brush or your layer, or like Sallyanne screenshot, take a look at the optons, BG or FG, and so...

Thanks for replies.

Can't fathom it. RGB mode.
All at 100% opacity - both bucket and brush.
In the end I copied the layer elsewhere and it's accompanying layers and all OK creating from "scratch"
