The Black and White foreground and background default colours are red and white instead of Black and white. This happened some time ago and I thought ,"I'll get to that sometime and fix it". Unfortunately , I am having a real problem fixing it. Using preferences Save on exit/ Save now /Reset tool options not do it. I have looked in rc files but cannot find anything that points to default colours or something that points to "red". I have scanned Registry for Gimp entries that might contain a color default. I cant find anything.
I can reset it with the "reset to default" thingy in the bottom right of the tools panel. So something somewhere is over riding the default. of black and white.
The preference panel will remember all other preferences such as window position ,etc.
I have over looked something .
Windows XP sp2 , Gimp 2.6.8 now Gimp 2.6.6 to try and isolate and also a system restore to an earlier date .

I had the same problem. I was using my Wacom tablet, set the color to light blue, and changed some tool settings. When I clicked the "Save Tool Options Now" button in preferences, it locked in the light blue. It took me forever to fix it. I had to reconnect the tablet, since I don't use it all of the time, change the color back to black, and used the stylus (pen) to click the "Save Tool Options Now" button. This worked for me. I hope this helps.

Photomaster You are a legend!!! I did as you said. It did not work the first time, but it did the second time!! I do not pretend to even remotely understand how this works or where the association between tablet and gimp exists.
You can rightly go around with a smile on your face today, you earned it!!!

I'd've thought doing an "Edit->Preferences->Input Devices->Restore Input Device Settings to Default Values" would've accomplished that (I don't have a tablet with which to test though).

I'll be purchasing one at the end of the year, and its nice to have this information ahead of time.

Hi, Saulgoode, perhaps that could have worked. But why would I do that (reset input devices) or associate an extended input device as a problem with a tools setting?
Also, the funny part is that unless you use the stylus/tablet before opening Gimp, the Extended Input Devices block is empty (no extended input devices message) and the stylus can only be used as a cursor pointer. Note that it can be used in other applications as a stylus, so there are marks on the wall somewhere and the pen tablet application has executed during "start up".
I only tried to restore the tools settings with the edit/preference/Tool Options.
I think the key to this is the fact that I used the configured tablet pen to reset the tools options.
Again , I do not pretend to understand this, but it did fix my problem the second time!!
The only other clue I can offer is that I saw a momentary message flash that referred to an older version Gimp the second time???

Gimp knows whether you are using your tablet or other pointing device, and whether your using the stylus pen nib or the eraser end. As a result, it holds different settings for each. When the tablet is disconnected, it gets confused as to which settings to use.
