Thanks. I've had a look but I'm convinced I'll need a new computer to run any of these Distros and when I get one it'll be Fedora 17 I install. (Or probably 18 by the time I can afford it.)

Erisian Linux is not like Windows as far as hardware requirements are concerned.
I your cpu is x686 or better it will install.

My experience is that modern Linux operating systems crash badly on my PC. Fedora 14 is probably the newest I can get away with but it doesn't recognize my mobile broadband. As much as you Linux users like to run Windows down, it's still the most stable OS I've encountered IMO.

Not sure what your hardware is Erisian, but I had installed Ubuntu on a client's PC (around 3 years ago; his system was a few years old as I recall and had only 512MBytes RAM) since that client had an illegal copy of XP and it was our policy not to cheat. He actually ended up liking it; had to repair his Ubuntu install around 9 months later (used a command akin to checkdsk as I recall; don't remember the actually command but did remember I spent way too much time finding it for the solution since I was even more the novice then I am no (and still a novice; lol) and indeed fixed it for him. Ubuntu, I bet, will run on you platform. As old as it is, I'm sure you can only handle 32-bits so download it and you will be happy since Ubuntu, even then, found all the hardware devices (including sound) right out of the box. Now it's even better. The live disk (bet you there's a pen version of it too) can be run on your platform without install and you can see for yourself if it doesn't indeed find your devices. You will even be able to browse online. Now if you are using a USB base internet connection, then I'm not sure; if you are using an ethernet connected system then I know you won't be sorry.

I've got 1gb RAM and Ubuntu is slow. Gutsy Gibbon is the last Ubuntu that ran smoothly.

Until recently my VM only used 768MBytes of RAM, but I do have a dual processor and they clock at 2.4GHz. I am envious of the new processors and might indeed splurge in 2 years (figure today's speedsters will be tomorrows barebones general; lol).

Good news then Erisian. Sad that your platform couldn't work with Ubuntu though. XP still has til I believe 2014 for security support (or is it 2013; lol). I'm typing this right now in my sandboxed XP VM. Finding a few sites that are not really IE8 friendly anymore though (think things are starting to go HTML5 and don't believe there is an HTML 5 capable for the XP platform, but I could be wrong).

Believe that might be right; not sure since fdisk in Windows has a completely different meaning (like creating partitions and wipeing them too; lol).
