Just spent 2 hours trying to get Meerkat to work but I couldn't get out of the command prompt. Finally, just had to give up and recover from an image (vbox) that I saved from Early September. Man, am I perturbed non the less. 4am now too and now just can't sleep. Why Ubuntu; why? lol

Now, getting a months worth of updates (minus Meerkat; won't do that again for a few months anyway. Might download the image and try to update from a pseudoCD rather then update using Update Manager.).

i learned in the hard way...NEVER NEVER try to upgrade Ubuntu to a new major release.
Just back up what needed and overwrite with the newer release

Last time i did was almost fine except for a little but strategically placed bug in Grub ,
as result Windows patition was no more accessible and i had not only to back up linux but also windows and reformat everything.

But everytime i had problems...update is fine but uppgrade is too risky

My vent is that I still can't get Python Wrap Map, Fog and others to work. They show up that they are there and they are not greyed out. But when I click them, nothing happens.
On Wrap map, I made the two layers first layer, transparent, second layer 25x25 with gradient. then I click, and no box comes up. The same thing with the Fog filter.
This is where I have the wrap-map-0.3py installed.

I want that so bad cuz I just love those frames that "o" and PM were making with it.... :gaah

This is my first post to this forum.

Hi y'all,

Had the same problem with upgrading for Lucid to Meerkat from the update manager. I save to the cloud anyway (Dropbox), so I had a no problem installing fresh from a USB pen drive. Although this is not the preferred option as I then had to spend a few hours importing contacts/settings/bookmarks etc. Thought it was just me who had issues.

Took half a hour to get the netbook edition live CD to boot, but got an error and needed to boot into the desktop edition and then I couldn't make a live USB. Are they sure this is the stable release.
TightGrip, how did you manage to make your pendrive?

May be stable but is a PITA to install :hoh
Apparently everything went fine for me but, when i had to restart to complete the install Grub was no more able to load Linux. :gaah

And so now i must overwrite everything again

PS that really stable should be the previous 10.04 that offer 3 years support
this is one of the short term release planned to be replaced in 6 mounth ( ..so just at soon all the bugs are fixed  )

I've got linux mint 9 on a pendrive right now. But haven't installed it yet because it still has some major hardware compatibility issues. Was hoping some of them were fixed. Don't mind things like shortkeys not working but I cannot set the touchpad to lefthanded and the mic and headphones don't work. Got the latter to work but not the rest yet. A shame really because surfing the internet is much faster.

Should have heeded my warning PC. lol (laughing with you not at you). I guess we both still have to go through the school of hard knocks. lol

As a side note, just finished updates to my XP Virtual PC VM (keep it for a few of my Dad's programs that I've been too lazy to figure out why they won't work in VBOX XP), Win7 and Office (still have an issue with my Office updates, and have to always download and install the Administrator patches but those will work; time consuming none the less), and my VBox XP VM (easiest of the bunch; saved it for last since it is a stress reliever; lol). Well over an hour later, I finally am able to type this. What a pain. Going to copy this part to my thread at DPR too.

:gaah Now is too much
i am going to reformat again to cancel the cursed Makrat thingy, and go back to 10.04 that, if updated work much better
(that is very easy, will be hard find something that will not work better )

The cursed Makrat was even able to found the wireless connetion, maybe because in that moment the laptop was at 10 cm from the router...and is even able to mantain the connection for :gaah almost 5m

anyway even that 5 minutes connection fails if i raise the distance to more then 20 cm
on the other hand is unable to detect the wired connection

then Firefox crashed immedietly locking the mouse cursor and keyboard command so there is no way to kill firefox, or even to close the session,(except by brute force )

To everybody willing to try the last Ubuntu release i may just suggest to wait that all bugs are fixed, ...i believe will be needed about 6 mounth ....exactly when will be ready a new realise :wh

I may suggest a new name for this Ubuntu release :
using as usual animal names i would propose
"Ubuntu Buggy Bugs Party 10.10"

Trust me PC; I spent well over an hour and finally was able to get a GUI (startx wouldn't work; found a thread that led me to a solution, but the solution was short lived). The good thing about recovery point in VBox is that it took mere seconds to recover. Just wish I would have created a more current recovery point prior to trying the Meerkat update. I have 3 years, so surely a better Ubuntu will be released by then. :)

First, I read this with some interest because on the Ubuntu forum they were warning people not to use the UPGRADE method with Meerkat (or any upcoming versions) and gave a link to a tutorial on how to approach the update. It involves backing up essential files and folders, then deleting partitions, and then a clean install.

The link can be found here:

Maybe so Mahvin, but PC actually, I believe, did this and still has run into issues. Before PC posted, I was going to do exactly this (didn't have an issue when updating to Lynx by the way from Koala) but decided just to keep Lynx for now. It works. Hopefully, if somebody gets Meerkat to work and says to me how great it is, that I will download the ISO and create a new VM and share between the two VMs any common data. Lot of work that I'm now unwilling to do until I see a lot of happiness with it (so far I haven't seen any). :)

I will install Meerkat on my standalone system (no Windows partition, just Linux) this week sometime and see what happens. I've been hesitant to do this simply because of my concerns of what is happening to you (and many others).

@PC: you deleted the old 10.04 partitions before doing a clean install? Did you make sure the swap partition was off?

Any of you guys out there watching the chile mine rescue. It is to begin in little over an hour. It will be amazing after being trapped down there for over two months.... They will be bringing them up one by one in a small capsule which has never been done before.
