GIMP Version: 2.8
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: Win7 x64
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

So I opened up an image and did a simple brush stroke, and was very surprised to see that GIMP was LAGGING like CRAZY!! I don't know what happened!! I did a system restore, emptied my cache(s) and adjusted various settings to no avail!
The image I used was 2448x3264, which may be part of the problem, but it edits seamlessly in Paintnet - and I've got 8GB RAM, and a suitable graphics card and processor, so I don't think they would be the culprits.

Please don't tell me that I've found a hideous limitation to my newly beloved GIMP?? Please tell me I've overlooked something and that there is a FIX!

2.8 brush is known to be slow.. something to do with color management IIRC. If your image is already using the sRGB profile you can disable color management and see if it improves things.

It was also the gradient and many other tools btw - gradient being the worst, showing a slow progress circle

Hi clanderson,
I'm using Linux but experienced the same problem.
I then installed gimp-2.8.1 thanks to a link supplied by partha.
It's far snappier than 2.8.0 with color management.
Go to this site and pick up gimp-2.8.1 (Gimp 2.8 (Unofficial)).
http://www.partha.com/
Good luck.
Gerard.

There are two things that may be slowing you down.
First off, did you optimize gimp for yor computer? Check out this gimp video tutorial for more info on that: http://gimpedtutorials.com/index.php/ho ... -the-hood/

Second off, there is a reported big in 2.8 that causes go to run very slowly on some computers when color management is turned on. Try turning it off in the preferences window.

Have you installed the 64bit version of gimp ? (if was not specified ,no, it was 32bit )

Because if not gimp can't do anything with your 8GB ram...more exactly can't do anything with 6 of your 8GB but only use max 2 as all 32bit softwares

Not that the difference would be stunning at least on my system the 64bit version is not so much faster but is much less slowed down by other programs running simultaneously

I am running Gimp-2.8(64-bit). I also have 8GB-ram. I don't have any problems with speed of the APPs. I am running Fedora-17. Maybe you should try the 64 bit version of Gimp. Just my guesss.

Thank you for all of the input guys!
But sadly, I already have the x64 version and had my cache size properly set - but thank you for that tut tstandiford.

And Gerard - IT WORKED! GIMP 2.8.1 fixed the issue!! I opened up that gigantic image and did some brush strokes and gradient, and it worked flawlessly!!
Thank you guys for all of your help, I really appreciate you taking the time! :)

Oh, and Gerard (or anybody else), I don't need to keep GIMP 2.8 do I? CCleaner says 2.8.1 is quite a bit smaller than 2.8, made me kind of nervous.

Sorry can't advise you about that.
The last Windows I really used was '98.

I think you can keep both versions if they are in separate folders. I have had 2 and 3 versions of Gimp in Windows before. When I decided which one I liked best, I deleted the other ones.
Each version creates its own user folder, one for 2.8 one for 2.8.1 etc.

@molly,
partha has been so kind to provide me with a link to the sources for 2.8.1.
I think I owe him and since I recognized the problem as what I experienced of course I directed clanderson to partha's site.

I read somewhere that 2.8.2 will be coming, I hope soon.
Then I can install it from Gentoo's repository which will be better because it'll take care of dependencies automatically.
Gerard.

Thanks Gerard. I didn't know I could download a Gimp version that isn't in the repository. I haven't had any problems yet except the one where it shuts down every time I Export. It doesn't seem to do that when I save as XCF, very strange.

Well it's not that simple molly.
I had to compile it myself and find all dependencies myself.
I posted a howto on GC about a year or so ago.
When one does that the OS isn't aware of it.
So I prefer the official install media if available.
Gerard.

On at least windows, it doesn't. The user folder is 'gimp-2.8' for the 2.8.1 version also.
Maybe partha did a change in the source, but in the git-sources, it isn't.

2.8.1 is of course based on 2.8.0, so there is no need to keep both versions.
2.8.1 has a lot of bug corrections, but no new features.
I use my own 2.8.1, made from the freshest git-sources, because I have proposed some patches, that I use, but are not commented by the developer team.

Onkel Hatti,
I'd appreciate a link to those sources.
I read in a bug report where you proposed changes for lcms2.
That would be great to have.
Gerard.

The source is:

git://git.gnome.org/gimp

That means, you have to use git.
I use windows XP32/Vista 64 as developing VMs, there are very useful graphical git-tools.
I use the standard MingW environment for compiling and Eclipse CDT for debugging purposes.

@gerard82
Oh, I've just seen, you are using Linux only.
Sorry, so my last statement is not useful for you...
