Thanks Molly and Drac. Step 30 had me stumped. I thought it must have been my stupidity but now I know it was Drac's. :hehe

I got side-tracked but here is a simplistic version of step 30 showing the darkened background using the black layer like a mask without affecting the text. The XCF attached is a quick throw together to illustrate how the layer is used and the Opacity is set a bit darker on the black "Mask" layer.

thanks Drac, I will take a peek at it.

i must be really inattentive, because i completely missed what step 30 actually said! i did what we were supposed to do (made a black layer with opacity pulled down and the text (or in my case the paisley) masked and now when i went back and checked the pdf i was really surprised to see it read just like molly quoted it. so possibly the people who didn't have any problems with step 30 were not smarter than you, molly, but just more inattentive and lazy readers, just like me

.

Hey....I resemble that! :hoh

Mmm - let me think. Now what do you resemble Drac. :rofl

Let's don't go there OK? The visual of a ruptured yak is rather distasteful at best. :scram

Oh don't put yerself down. :rofl

I have just downloaded your tutorial and I'm having a problem with step 13. "Inner Shadow".

I have used both gimp 2.6 and 2.8 and I do not have a "Layer effects" sub-menu under "Layer"

Am I doing something wrong?

All fixed. I found the script in the Gimp Registry...

Beautiful Dalia, I love your choice of colors and background, KUDO's

Thank you molly - I must have made a mistake along the way because my text color didn't come out as Drac's - so I played around with the background to sort of make it complement.

Dalia if you like the tutorial try the Script located at GimpScripts Antique Metal

or still use your own Background↓

I wouldn't change a thing... It is A-1

The script I posted had options taken out due to menu size constraints, I think I'll put some back in

Once again, thanks molly.

Graechan, thank you for your suggestion and the script.

I really enjoyed this tutorial! I thought I would post my results in case anyone was interested.

The second image is the first one I tried, and I found that setting the layer mode to Grain Extract for the layer with the highlights and shadows added a slight patina effect to the text, which I thought was pretty cool.
