I had a script from Saulgoode that was so useful for my work-flow. the name was something close to "Photocomix _new layer from visible " and, how may be guessed from the name was a variation of Layer> New from visible

The differences :
The new layer always on top of the layerstack
The active layer not changed ( in the normal version the new layer become the active layer)
The name of the new layer : formed by the active layer mode + opacity value
(i.e "Overlay 74")

The intended use

So many

When playing with layer modes it is precious to save the most interesting combinations ,
And save with all data needed to replicate the effect on similar images embedded in the image name, so always at hand reach

BUT I LOST IT :gaah

I hope Saulgoode or someone else that may have a copy because i badly miss it

Google is your friend: [Photocomix new layer from visible]
Looks like it is there - not sure if it includes the subsequent change request you made :-)
