Insspired by Draconians snow brush and the ensuing discussion about meteor showers. I decided to play around with it some more and put those meteors on a nicer backdrop. This is the result. I can't decide whether to keep the mountain range or go completely to space with it. Suggestions appreciated. I had to size it to get it to fit here.

Nice work. I would keep the mountain range, it gives a sense of scale to the image. Also, you'll need an atmosphere in order to see a meteor shower anyway.

how did you make the sky with the galaxies ?

I agree with keeping the mountains. It is very nice.

I like it, curious as to how you made the planet.

@he4rty: made with solid noise and motion blur/wind, then strapped it to a sphere with map object. I added lighting after, by hand, makes it look more like a planet and not just space balls. (good movie btw, love Mel Brooks.)

@ Esper: Yeah, see, that's bothering me too, I think they oughta be something more. I'll probably go back in and fiddle with size and jagged edges and such and see if that helps at all.

I made the background actually in Apophysis. It's a png I rendered a while back. It's what my comp does when I sleep. Then I make these renders into galactic nebula by screening stars onto them. This is not my first.

I've seen all those tutorials, but thanks for linking them here, they are indeed good ones and actually where I got my start with space art. I think that approach to saturn rings is maybe the cleanest I've seen around the web, gives the best results. Definitely recommended.

(My signature happens when you get sleep deprived and run out of things to gimp at strange hours of the day/night. I could maybe work on a tutorial if you're interested.)
