Exporting Exif Data in JPEGs

Operating System: Mac OS
OS Version: 10.8.2
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

Hi Guys,

Probably a dumb question, but.....

How do I get Gimp to save the exif data in exported JPEG files.

The option appears to be there (the tickbox on the left between Progressive and Save Thumbnail):

But it's ghosted out and I cant get it to become available!

I think it shows up if the image is originally a photo JPEG with the EXIF data in it. If you paste the photo in another image (or File/Open as layers...), the EXIF data is not kept. And if there are no EXIF data, there is no point in asking you if you want to save them.

Thanks, ofnuts. That makes sense, but the original image was a TIF, converted from my camera's raw file using Canon Digital Photo Professional and it definitely had the Exif data in it. It looks like Gimp is supposed to have the option to save the data, but I can't see how to turn it on!

But then again... I've just tried opening the raw file into Gimp (via UFRAW) and the option to save the exif info is there.

Perhaps Gimp doesn't read Exif from TIF files?

Yup... a further experiment: I used DPP to convert the raw file to a JPEG instead of a TIF, then loaded the JPEG into Gimp & resaved it. The Exif info has been retained.
It looks like I need to make a change to my workflow if I want to keep the Exif data.

There are utilities to copy EXIF data between files.

If your keen on working with EXIF info, have a look at ExifTool by Phil Harvey. The import and export options are just one of the nice features. There is a GUI available as well.

Thanks. I don't need to do anything complicated - just retain the camera details on lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed etc from the original photo. The easiest solution is just to export from DPP as a highest quality JPEG rather than a TIFF.
