great looking gems, especially with the prism effect in the reflections and lighting.

Very nice. What texture did you use for mapping the surface?

thanks everyone!

@ AnMal you have a knack for the jewelry design, sister! My stones, your design - sounds like a great business ;)

@Rod no textures strictly speaking, only materials, which were glass for both gems and the base with
some differences in IOR - 2.42 for diamonds, 1.47 for the base.
All real physics. I don't remember exactly how many photon traces were generated by Vray,
but for the first image it was over 167 000. Modeling diamonds was the easiest part.
Lighting and material settings were the real PITA.

Wow; the cautics are awesome and the render looks so real. One day they are going to invent and energy to matter convertor but it will take a lot of energy to make since m = E/c^2 lolol

:)

Thanks Eris, Lyle!

Yes, without Vray's caustics it looks crappy, not anywhere close to real diamonds, Blender yet to learn how to make it right (both caustics
and SSS are somewhat underdeveloped and Blender doesn't render the thickness of (semi-)transparent objects right - the main reason I used
Vray renderer)

Really nice results looks almost real but the white highlights seem a bit harsh especially round the edge. Even so great results as I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Thanks he4rty! I can explain why the reflections seem harsh.
First off, what you see is basically done in 3d with practically no post-processing.
Secondly, the source of light had to be bright enough to lit up the entire scene.
That and 3d's perfect geometry causes harsh reflections.

The geometry of things like diamonds (properly made) in 3d programs are thousand times more perfect than in real life.
That means perfect angles, perfect reflections, etc. Real problem, imo. I spend a lot of time positioning the
source of lite (with perfect geometry too, lol) to minimize harsh reflections. Now I know what I should have done.
Use a dozen of lamps instead of just one. Well, like I said, it was my first go at diamonds, and they are tough to make
even for a seasoned artist.
