Most of this has to do with "Layer Styles" GIMP cannot handle them, yet.
But if you check the roadmap website they are going to be in GIMP in the future. GIMP does have
LayerFX.py and does a great job of importing those effects into PSD files. By the way these are preview-able with this plug-in.This is what is so great about GIMP. You can create your own plug-ins and filters with python, C, or Scheme. And if you have Linux probably Pearl too.
Personally i would like to see GIMP adopt a GEGL 3D plug-in in the future. With a live preview.
