Try this normal map (bundled with other maps) and see how it works.

Usually you don't smooth the diffuse texture for your UV layout. Instead, manipulate the normal map. If the attached NM isn't working for your character, you can smooth it out in GIMP: Duplicate NM a few times, the bottom layer is in normal mode 100% opacity, every next layer above is gaussian-blurred by 5 px increment and the blend mode set to overlay.
it will look like this: Layer 4 - NM copy, gaussian blur 15 px, Overlay mode, opacity 80% Layer 3 - NM copy, gaussian blur 10 px, Overlay mode, opacity 80% Layer 2 - NM copy, gaussian blur 5 px, Overlay mode, opacity 80% Layer 1 [bkg layer]- your Normal Map (NM), Normal blend mode, opacity 100%
Now, those are not strict settings, you might wanna play with the amount of blur and opacity. It gets smoother with each additional layer, but you might need only 1 or 2 extra layers, it depends on kind of 3d software you use and how it handles UV mapping.
Make a few normal maps with varying smoothness and see which one works better for you. With 3d texturing it's always kind of trial and error kind of thing before you figure out the right one.
