I'm looking for how to make a broken wooden board. I need to know this desperately, I already know the firm basics on making the textures of wood, but I'm not sure how to go about making it so it looks broken. I drew a really quick photo to give you guys an idea of what I want.

Thanks guys.

:welcome to GC, Lieutenant.

You're on the right track. Just create the outline of the board, as you've already done. Then, fill the outline with a wood pattern, like the one Rod posted.

You can add beveling and/or bump mapping to get more depth and texture in your final image.

I drew an outline, then used the Logo Toolbox script to render the board. This is just a quick and dirty example. With a little effort, you can get a more realistic, splintered look.

Do your edge cutout, dup, then run motion blur on your base image and dup that layer and fill center layer with black set to overlay and reduce opacity to taste. I did try to textureize the edge as well, but not really happy with that. lol

Thanks Rod for the texture. Now got to try to catch 10 minute catnap before heading to work. :)

Sometimes it helps to put something behind it. Depends on the effect you are trying to achieve.

Your best bet is to grab an old 2x4 and break it between two trees growing close together.
Then you will have a sort of model to go by what a broken beam should look like. :)
