I am such a total noob I can't even manage to cut and paste...
I made two screen shots; lets say each is 3inches square. I want
to combine them so that one is on the left and the other is on the right and so the final resulting size will become 6inches wide and 3inches high. This is embarassing, but nothing I do works to put one next to the other.

Create a new document 6x3 inches then open each image as a layer (file-open as layer) then you can use the alignment tool to push one to the left and the other to the right.

I appreciate the help, but I am a real noob... Under File > Create there are things like clipboard and screen shot, but no "new document". Edit has no "create", neither does any of the other tabs as far as I can see. How does one do what you indicate?

- Open the first document ("File/Open")(preferably the one that will be on the left)
- Add the second document as another layer ("File/Open as/Layers")
- "Image/Canvas size": double the width: either set units to "%" and enter 200, or just add "*2" and press [enter] at the end of the width. Then click "Resize"
- Check "View/Snap to canvas edges"
- Use the "Move" :move tool and drag the upper layer to the right. Due to the previous step it will self-align to the edges of the canvas as long are close enough.

Don't forget that to obtain a format other than XCF you have to use File/Export.
