If was something in the profile the portable version should have worked

Anyway if she use the normal version it is a good idea delete the profile in case of problem (it is recreated new the first time gimp will load , so nothing is lost except old saved preferences

Done that she may try
1) temporary close all antivirus, firewall etc ( she may temporary disable connection to avoid risk...just to troubleshoot and see if is a antivirus the cause
2) run gimp as "admin"
3) run gimp in "compatibility mode"

Honestly 1 (some antivirus or security setting that lock gimp ) still seems to me the most probable cause

Thanks PhotoComix. I'll pass this message on to her. Hopefully it will help. :)

I gave Jay the link and she took a look at the post and tried everything you listed PhotoComix, but she still can't get gimp to work.

If she has GIMP installed, running from the command prompt is a good place to start. In Windows, the command is...

gimp-2.8.exe

Then, post everything that appears back here so we can take a look.

For more detailed output, she can use the verbose option (better)..

gimp-2.8.exe --verbose

Thanks, Tux. I'll pass on that information & report back here with what she says.

GnuTux,

Jay says she has gimp installed but when she tries to get the output, the verbose option automatically closes for her.

It sounds like she might be running gimp-2.8.exe from the run dialog. She needs to fully open a command prompt before running the gimp-2.8.exe command.

Here are several options for opening a command prompt in WIndows 7

Ok, Jay still can't get gimp to work for her. She tried running a command prompt but that didn't work. Is there anything else that she can try?

We need the messages generated when she runs GIMP from the command prompt.

Without those messages to give us a clue as to what is happening, we are in the dark.

Without those messages, the only recommendation you're likely to get is to re-install.

Without those messages, any advice you get will be a guess.

Bottom line, we need those message to proceed any further.

It's not that hard to run gimp from the command line and copy and paste the output back to here.
