would be too challenging (or even impossible) to do it in 2D program,
I posted the same illusion a while back, YAFU accepted the challenge but did it in Blender 3D

I have seen the illusion before, but this inside vortext thing is way better.
So trippy (I had to make sure it's not an animated .gif).
It's so awesome i had to share it on facebook

What i find really strange (unexpected) is that with the vortex, it looks like it's rotating toward the black sides, while conbagui's tutorial makes it look like it's travelling/moving toward the white sides (wonder why that is).

It's been a few years, but I used to do it quite often. I wrote tons of text tutorials in the past on various websites, and also did video tutorials on YouTube. I redid tutorials and removed others where I discussed how it was designed instead of actually designing it. My channel has went through tons of changes over the years.

Here's my try at it lol. Profile file included encase anyone who wants to play with it.

Tim,
One explanation is on which side of the brain we are using. (or more activity, something)
The picture below can be seen spinning in both directions.
If you focus on abstract reasonings, you can see the rotating counterclockwise direction picture.

Akros, on the spinning illusion yes, it can be observed to be spinning both ways.
but on the white and black vortext illusion i can't change the direction of the movement (it seems it's always static).

I can get it to switch either way by concentrating on the shadow below the feet. Once it spins one way it's hard to get it to spin the other way until I look away and think of something more mathematical. lolol

You're so right. Looking at the foot shadow does the trick.

This train animation appears to reverse direction.

i had to try this in blender.
the mapping isn't perfect but something is moving.

here's one with your color scheme mikethedj4

it's interesting that the two images seem to move in opposite directions, maybe it creates an illusion of movement from darker color through white then towards lighter color. maybe that's how it works.

:coolthup Tin,
I liked the result and would like to know how to do it.
But it seems too complicated and do not see myself in the mood to try to learn how to use Blender.

But I can not see movement. I tried, but could not.

Hi,

How can I include my figure in that train gif? Is there a program I can use to do so?

I want to wait for that train eternally. Ha ha ha!

Conbagui, yours is moving really! that is actually the best result in the amazing effect. I suppose that it's very difficult to make it. :jumpclap

Yes. You can do it in GIMP. Just create a transparent image of the figure and place a copy above each of the four layers in the animation, then merge each figure down & export as an animated gif.

i wonder if conbagui's color scheme helps to see more movement in this image.
Image
or maybe a different alignment of the dots
