This is just a simple list of GIMP effects for starters like me. No plug-ins. Feel free to provide some comments. Some of the effects are not included since I don't see any different from a before-and-after test.

Filter
blur_pixelize
- creates pixels like the BG transparent
blur_motionblur_zoom
- works with cool zoom effect like its going to blow

Distort
blinds_segments
- can be used to create transparent horizontal and vertical lines (how about diagonal lines?)
curve_bend
- distorts image when several bends
emboss
- gives embossed effect
engrave
- gives engrave effect
lens distortion
- eating out an image
mosaic
- creates mosaic in the selection (octagons/hexagons) cool effect
page curl
- creates a page curl

I was using a cloud object but I used a black square for the tests below

polar coordinates
- cool effect but needs a wider base selection
ripple
- creates ripple but I don't get why it looks to odd than expected
shift
- creates chippings
waves_blacken
- cool effect but still a bit odd than expected (what does that smear do?)
whirl_pinch
- all options work pretty well with it
wind
- the wind makes hairstrands and blasts for barcodes

Light and Shadow
gradient flare
- have you ever seen those radiance in saint pictures? this is it
lens flare
- its good but I can't seem to find other effects
lighting effects
- kamehame wave effect and usable on comets if play with the materials
sparkle
- I was tipping the options then it was not responding after I clicked on inverse but has cool effect
supernova
- creates radiant and cool prism effects
drop shadow
- same as the name suggests
xach-effect
- I don't understand what it did but it works on something

Noise
hsv noise
- creates noise image like a staticky tv
random hurl
- same as hsv noise but with colors
random pick
- cool effect for dust, swaps, etc. (starts at the border)
slut
- it eats more than random pick
spread
- same as random pick and still starts at the border

Edge-Detect
Generic

Combine
filmstrip
- creates a film strip

Artistic
apply canvas
- it looks like a towel/fabric effect
cubism
- cool effect
GIMPressionist
- needs more detail but this effect has patterns on it
glass tile
- creates lines
oilify
- a combination of Gaussian blur and rounder corners (no intensified algorithm)
soft glow
- makes the color pale
van gogh
- he is a great artist but ???
weave
- cool effect to make a close-up fabric (someone give more details? it has no preview option in the box)

Decor
add bevel
- adds bevel as if its has a surface
add border
- adds the borders are the edge of the canvas
coffee stain
- creates a stain effect (takes time to load)
fuzzy border
- too weird (someone comment on this fuzzy border thing?)
old photo
- same as the name suggests

Map
displace_polar
- tips it over
fractal trace
- lots of weird stuff going on here
illusion
- doesn't look like an illusion but still cool
make seamless
- creates copies of the image then puts it at the corner
paper tile
- kinda weird but I'm sure it can be useful
small tiles
- chops the image depending on how many n2 you want
warp
- it creates simple round curves but it can turn the object into a powder if you edit it (kinda complicated to understand)

I was going to have it image by piece but it was too much for me. And I also skipped some of it because I don't know what it can really do.

Going through each of the menu options is a good place to start, Kenlee20. It's usually the first thing I do when trying to familiarize myself with an application.

In GIMP, you can spend years attempting to figure out what they do and still not be fully comfortable with all of the operations available. :hehe

For those you're uncertain about, I suggest you ask questions about one option at a time and I think you'll get better responses.

Another good thing to do would be to go through the Essential GIMP Tutorials. Get though those and you'll have a feel for how many more of the menu options function. :bigthup

Is there any option to revert back to the default numbers like the one's in paint.net? I kinda messed-up the levels and its hard to check each default if your working offline.

off-topic: how do you do vectors in gimp?

Hi,
Some filters have the Reset option.

Maybe the paths is what you are looking for.
In viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3315 found this link to Paths (video)

@Akros
Not all of it have the reset option so I have too look else where and reset the values. It's one of the features that I liked in Paint.net and I would be great to have that in GIMP.

Filters → Reset all Filters.
All tools have a reset option.
