Thanks for the excellent tutorial, Wallace! :bigthup

I've split the 3D Extrusion troubleshooting posts to their own thread here. I wanted to keep this tutorial thread clean and not confuse the issue with all the script troubleshooting posts.

Okay no problem... :bigthup
Thanks for doing that Tux. Hopefully this will be just a memory and things will work all around. Great work figuring this one out. I kind of exhausted all my ideas on the issue. You seem to make fast work of this, kudos to you Tux! :jumpclap

This filter works great in my McGimp and the video was very easy to follow. There is some jaggies, but I was working smallish and was only interested in trying out the tutorial.

2-ton, Wonder why you're seeing jaggys? Do you have anti-aliasing enabled for text in your McGIMP?

I don't really remember. I didn't bother to deal with all the details, I just wanted to quickly run through Wallace's tutorial and make sure the script worked properly.

*just checked and yes, it is checked because that is the default setting. And I did do the text to path and select from path.

Occasionally, I see jaggys on certain fonts, but not normally. Maybe there is something that needs adjusted with system font rendering on the MAC? Do you normally see aliasing on fonts in GIMP? We could do a side by side test to check to see if there are differences between OS's using the same font/size?

Thank you Wallace for such a nice easy 3D extrusion Text. I really love this style and at the end I got it thanks to you and GnuTux. :jumpclap :tyspin
Nice outcomes above. :hi5

Wondering why I get extra marks where there was nothing before - I know they can easily be erased away. I did the line-art one again and have circled (in black) where I could see them.

I like your outcome with marks, Sallyanne, It's seems to have a nice pattern on. :bigthup

You can make selections using :fuzzsel of these areas of the line art, before running the 3D Extrusion. To see if there are any anomalies in these spots that you've marked. If you do find any stray pixels, you can then remove them before running the script.

Here is an example of what happens when unwanted stray pixels are left in an image.

This first image has very faint stray pixels in some places, which can be hard to see as well as finding and removing.
Image

This next image shows a 3D extrusion run with the stray pixels still present in the image.
As you can see, the anomalies follow the direction of the extrusion.
These anomalies produced by the 3D Extrusion script can be seen within the red circles.

3D text is good but gets boring, so I picked up on Sallyanne's shapes extrusion and had some 3d extrusion fun with Celtic knots ...

Image

... and then some 3D extrusion confusion ...

Image

... but its OK since my excuse is "well I'm a senior"! :gimp

You make a good point about text being boring, but I see you've found a remedy for that with your posted images. :hehe

Thanks Wallace ... so with your (implicit) permission, last one for another day frantically GIMPing; I extended the 3D extrusion concept by adding a progressively decreasing background to the foreground shape using 'ofnuts' path tools.

Just love this GIMP toy and all the script contributions to it. :yes

Those are cool results, Sallyanne & OMG. :bigthup

A variation of Wallace's tutorial would be to create the text at the top of the canvas. Leaving the text in the top position, increase the image's canvas height to a larger value, say 1500px. Then, run 3D Extrusion with "Extrusion Type" set to "Shrink" and Extrusion depth set to a higher value (40 or 50+).

You can get a fly out effect similar to this..

Image

When using Extrusion Type "Shrink", the extrusion is scaled down toward the middle of the canvas, so placing the text/image at the extreme top/bottom/left/right of a large canvas will result in this kind of effect. :cool

The skew on my result was done after the fact.

@GnuTux - thank you for your pertinent advice on using extruded text - now I think about it, how could I ever think of text as 'boring', after all it is just another series of shapes, just right for being played with!! What my comment actually showed was a complete lack of imagination on my part at the time - oh dear me!

So I have chastised myself severely (that means I mowed the lawn this morning!) and have applied your approach just to get the adrenalin flowing again :yes
