Different blendings of Stencil followed by Gradient Norm, Pat. Then, on top layer, ran Isophots (outline on transparent option). Applied a convolution step to make the facial imprint stronger and did a few other things as well, but the afore steps would get you close enough. As for a tut; forget it (and I'll PM you as to why). :)

I worked a lot on this Lyle, but I can't get the string to look like yours. Anyway, here goes:

Don't forget the color to alpha step (black to alpha) and then do the blending. I did forget to add that I texturized the lines a bit too. ;)
