Awhile back I put a couple of layers together that had an interesting result and I liked it.
I think I used the dissolve mode when putting them together but I don't have the XCF or cannot reproduce it. I have cut a small part of the effect out.
Image
The blue area was a smaller layer underneath and the orange I cut a circle out of the middle and put that layer on top. I have tried all the modes without success. Does anyone know how I could have done this?

I think you were right about the layer mode being dissolve.
You would need to use that layer mode and then blur the layer to get this effect.
I would duplicate the layer before blurring and adding the layer mode,
then apply the blur to the bottom copy.
Also,
lowering the blurred layer's opacity kind of spreads out this effect.

Here's an example image.

Tried your instructions and I still couldn't get anywhere, but with your help I also thought of (noise). "There has to be noise!" So I tried spread.
After I made a border around with the selection I clicked on Noise - spread and came up with this.

That's pretty good sallyanne.
I'm sure that you can get the same results I did,
using the dissolve layer mode.
Did you download my xcf file,
to have a look at it?
It's mostly about the blur and putting the layers in the right place,
with the proper opacity for the spread you want.
Experiment with the dissolve layer mode and blurring,
lowering the layers opacity,
to find the type of spread you like.

I selected ellipse around butterfly copy and paste that as new layer on top of background.
Layer to Image Size it.
Selected a smaller ellipse around butterfly, Feather with 100 pixels.
Invert selection, Gausian blur with a huge radius like 200 pixels.
Set butterfly layer to dissolve.

There's even a better way without having the image blurred at all.
Just select your butterfly, feather it with a large radius.
Paste on top of background. Layer->To New Layer.
Then set to dissolve.

Sallyanne, that is so nice! Nifty! Beautiful! Really a good idea! I have some pics of my grandchildren that I wanted to do something different with. Mind if I steal your idea and do something similar?

Not at all Pat. I'm sure someone has thought of it before me and you will no doubt do something really nice.
