Is it different from the 2.10 version? I have that one.

As you know, 2.10 is still in development, thus not completely stable.
This 2.10.4 fixes some issues (less "crashes", for instance).

Up to now, I didn't have any crash on 2.10. And it took me some time to get this version to work on the stick.
Unless I have problems with it I'll stick to 2.10 provisionally.

For what it's worth....
...I have 2.10.4 and everything's seems to be fine.

I also have Samj's Portable 2.10.4 and BRL is included.
However, the Ofnuts "Text along Path" (also included) does not work.
Can anyone tell me why?

Don't know but tested it on version 2.10 and it works there.
You just have to right click the text layer and then "text along path."

I don't get that option when I right click a layer.
I'm talking about Ofnuts "add on" where you right click a layer in the "pen tool" tab.
Then you go to the very bottom of the dialogue to use the "Text along path" tool.
This is the one that is not working in Samj's portable which is included in that package.

Peter, the error you get seems to indicate that in the package a required "piece" is omitted, related to that plug_in; better if you notify this to Sylvie&Michel (samj) on their site, adding a "commentaire"

Looking at the error message, looks like the plugin is in the wrong location. Samj Gimp 2.10 is a portable version with its own 'Gimp profile' In the preferences folder -> there is the plug-ins folder.

However

Maybe time to look at using the regular Gimp tools which allows other possibilities for formatting text-along-a-path.

That's okay. It's easy to misunderstand computer stuff.
I am interested, however, in the screen shot you showed me, is that samj's portable or PC version? Whatever it is, I'm curious to know what version you have because I would like to get the option that you get from right-clicking the layer, or was this a script you added or what?
I have 2.10.4 in both samj's and the PC version of GIMP and I don't get that at all.
Imagine my surprise when I saw your screen shot.

I have the portable 2.10 version on a USB stick and the 2.8 on my PC.
You have to right click the text layer in the layers panel to get all the options, not in the working space.

Okay, I finally got the option to do "text to path."
But to my dismay... it doesn't work. Nothing happens.

Insight into a PS user. There is no 'pen' tool for drawing paths only a paths tool

At least three ways for text to path



1. With the text tool open, right click for the context menu
2. Closed the text tool, but text layer is active. The text options are open in the Layer menu.
3. What you have been doing, what I do, right click in on a text layer in the layers menu, brings up a context menu.



It does work. Is the 'text' path in the paths dialogue visible?

Okay. I'm starting to see how this works.
Now I want to figure out how Ella Louise
did the circle text the way she did it.

Oh yes, it didn't even cross my mind that maybe you didn't drew a path before you tried putting the text around it.

Indeed there are several ways to edit the text around the path. I just showed the way I did it on the printscreen.
You're much more experienced to explain it all.

Yeah, came up on another forum, that the regular Gimp 2.10 reverses the expected direction of a path from a selection. Hopefully gets fixed (might already be fixed)

@rich2005: Thanks for the video. Very helpful.

Tried again today and downloaded Samj V3 portable and then followed Diego's configuration instructions also.

Lo and behold ... I now have all the various python/script-fu menus visible and it seems all their contents are available too. Whether they all will work or not, time will tell. Ofnuts add on manager also seems to be working OK, unlike previously.

Tried out Diego's version of Chisel or Carve - works OK.

Tried out BRL but the window is too big for my laptop screen, so will have to follow up on that matter; I'm sure I've seen that same matter raised somewhere here recently.

So thanks Samj for the update and thanks Diego for your configuration advice.
