I wonder if will be possible create a script or plugin to send the active image to MyPaint (that for who interested to digital paint is a perfect companion of gimp , see http://mypaint.intilinux.com/ )

I believe would be already possible use the ShellOut script from RobA (http://www.registry.gimp.org/node/24977 )but that has a limitation:
it may send only a copy of the active layer or the visible

Instead a " send image to MyPaint should

1) offer a choice to what send:
A - active layer
B-visible
C - MOST IMPORTANT -all the image
C should use the OpenRaster plugin (http://www.registry.gimp.org/node/18435 ) to first convert the image in a compatible format... then send it

it would be possible ?

PC i think you can just change the temp file save format within the shellout script for the MyPaint program like this...
  ["MyPaint", "\"C:\\Program Files\\MyPaint\\mypaint.exe\"" , "ora"],

I think that is the correct syntax you may want to ask Rob first. :)

Not sure if that will work though.Even if the syntax is right.
You may have to save the entire image as ORA first then transfer it over.If that's the case you may as well just open the ORA file with MyPaint itself.

The problem is that the GIMP plugin for saving ORA files does so really slowly, so you don't really save that much time with a 'send to' function. At least, that's how it is for me, and I tend to make large images with lots of layers though.

@Demen
Then you are using an old version of the plugin. :) Make sure to download and install the latest one. You are right that it used to be very, VERY slow. I had to convert to xcf in GIMP so I didn't have to save to ORA more than necessary. But the latest ora-reader plugin is, while not quite as fast as xcf-saving, very fast. Fast enough to make it worthwhile for me to work completely in ORA when working on a picture using these two programs.

@Photocomix
Compared to the complexity of setting it up, is there any real advantage (besides maybe saving a few seconds) of sending a file between the programs rather than simply saving in one, open in the other?

I am thinking PC wants to open all the layers from Gimp in MyPaint as an ora extension. :)

That is a good question, as now should be already possible send the visible or the active layer using a py script, so the only
advantage would be sent all the layers

Since i don't do script i ignore how may be complex a similar script

I like the idea because will give the feeling of a better integration between the 2 programs , for artistic mind feeling are very relevant a feeling of better integration may lead to shift more often between the 2 app , on the contrary may be a resistence to do it
But considering from a strictly logical point of view to the question if be worth only to save few second you may answer better than me...you paint and use MyPaint much more than i do.
(and if i am not wrong you already answered for you is not too important)

For sure the main function should be already available (by slighty changing the ShellOut script ) send the active layer or the visible should already cover the most commune needs, so maybe that is already sufficient

on the other hand i like anything may help to integrate different Open Source program ...

In a few words...if create a similar script is easy may be worth the effort , if not easy maybe better forget about
(i was thinking to ask your opinion before write the first message but for some reason i forgot to send the PM )
