I've seen Solarized with Vim in the past but just noticed today at the Solarized web site there is a palette for Gimp. The concept is interesting. The gimp-palette readme is worth a look as well.
http://ethanschoonover.com/solarized

The download is small and includes,
adobe-swatches-solarized
apple-colorpalette-solarized
emacs-colors-solarized
gimp-palette-solarized
intellij-colors-solarized
iterm2-colors-solarized
mutt-colors-solarized
netbeans-colors-solarized
osx-terminal.app-colors-solarized
putty-colors-solarized
seestyle-colors-solarized
textmate-colors-solarized
textwrangler-bbedit-colors-solarized
vim-colors-solarized
visualstudio-colors-solarized
xresources-colors-solarized

OK. Time to expose my ignorrance. What the heck is a Palette, where is it in the UI and how do you use it/them. Is there anywhere I can go (site?) that gives an indepth explanation?

A cool way to use it is in the Color Picker.

What ?
- A palette is a defined set of colors, think about a traditional painter, his canvas, his brushes, his palette. Simple as that. In the digital world, palettes were widely known in the 80's/90's because screen displays were forced to use a set of colors, a palette, in a narrow colorspace. For instance, the commodore 64, a popular computer from the 80's could only display 16 colors simultaneously, but not 16 colors you've chosen, no, 16 default colors you were forced to work with (with exceptions, hacks in fact, but its beyond the scope of this post :p)

Where ?
- I'd say the gimp doc Molly linked explains all of it

How/Why ?
- You may use palettes as color references to paint with, but you can also use the palette features to simulate a limited palette environment ('image/mode/indexed') perfect for pixel art, if you were drawing for a game that would only display a bunch of colors, you would need this feature to set up a convenient and cohesive workflow. Some NES game maybe:

Thanks Molly. That really makes it easy to make gradients that way. Hmmmm, I feel some more metallic gradients coming on. Must be something in the air.
