Ok, I am printing to a Direct to Garment printer with Gimp. The "platen" where you put your shirt is 14" x 16". So I start a new design in Gimp and make the canvas size 14.5 x 16.5.

Lets say I want to print the word "GIMP" on the shirt. I put the text on the canvas in GIMP where it should be placed on the shirt. The text is proportionate to how I want it to look on the shirt.

When I print the text is not only smaller than on the screen, but it is not centered. It is off to one side. I placed the text 2" down from the top of the canvas and this came out quite well.

Any ideas? And as usual, thanks much.

Have you adjusted the Print Size in the Image menu?

Yes it is the size I need. The x resolution and y resolution are a mystery. I will try and learn that.

I'm not sure I understand but do you have your resolution set for your system and in Gimp preferences? Have you tried using the alignment tool? Click on the text, then center it in the tool options dialog box.

Everything is set. I did not explain very well. I am printing on a 14 x 16 plate. I need to be able to print on that plate in the exact spot I see on my screen. So I opened a new project with the canvas size 14 x 16. I entered some text and did a test print. It printed off to one side although it is centered on my screen. Thanks much.

I think the justify in the options may do the trick. Just from an eyball it looks like it is what I needed. Let me do a test print.

Next I am trying to install Separate+. Yikes. I need CMYK.

Ok here is a jpeg. I used the center justify and this is where the text landed. From my test prints this spot looks like it will be printed on the center. But why is the canvas way off? The grid says 14 by 16?

Not sure the dpi settings ability of your printer. Canvas size also has to consider dpi. If you know these details please share. Let's assume that your fabric printer is able to print at 200dpi. Then, for a 14.5X16.5 area, the pixel resolution will be 2900pxX3300px. There, set the working canvas to the appropriate dimensions and dpi settings when you create your new image (expand the Advance Options to set the dpi (pixels/inch). Once you have the appropriate canvas/dpi settings, then place your text and objects where needed.
