This is an example of the Hockney effect. It's been around since the 70s. I used to be a professional photographer and I hadn't heard of this one.

Do you get that with your camera, Gms?

I'm going to go ahead and embed that video into here. It really is a great effect.

I did it based on a tut by an older guy. I didn't expect much at first but he has some really different tuts, using things in ways I haven't thought of. His name is Tom Bland and the tut for this is Here.
If by chance he's a member here and reads this, 'older guy' wasn't meant as an insult, a lot of us here are old guys.

I tried the video tutorial and it's a nice tutorial. I see where I could improve on placement of the brush but it's fun to do.

Yes, it has a lot of room for variations.

This is a tutorial I must try...and I can see where brush placement might be tough, but I suppose with practice it will get easier.
*now that I think about it, I wonder if there is a way to see what you are doing...it would be fairly necessary if you want to do this effect with a face.

:geek had to try it using my favorite head shot.

I do wish there was a way to plan the squares beforehand, comparing the two layers placements. My layers are too similar.

I tried lowering the opacity of the top layer of brushing, hid the smaller image layer and then selected the larger brush layer and placed the brushing with the top layer of brushing showing but much more transparent. I tried it on an image and did the brushing before I actually cut around the brushing on the image layers. It did help some.

I will do this tonight , but what may be interesting is to use brush dynamics (such as Size and Jitter) to vary the joiner size and placement

Ok, so I've had a go, followed loosely the text tut, as I don't really like video tutorials.

I think the hardest part and far harder than you'd imagine is placing the squares right, still not overly happy.

If anyone wants the pylon image to play with I'm attaching it, It's my photo so do what you like.

As I said earlier I will try with brush dynamics. It just does not seem to work well. So I tried with different brush sizes. I show what I did but I am not happy with the result. I think for this effect to work well you need be careful of the colour of the gradient and have a very good idea of overlap, spacing and placement of the joiners. Also I am not convinced about varying joiner sizes.
