Do you have all your layers open? The layers have to be opened to play as animation. Can you post a screen shot of your layers?

Your animation layers are gathered into a group folder? If so they won't play from it.

I tried playing an animation with grouped layers and it didn't work.

The only way I can figure out how to get layers out of a group (and I hope someone comes up with a better way) is to select a layer in the group, Ctrl + X to cut it and Ctrl + V to paste and choose to a new layer in the floating layer drop down list.

I haven't used layer groups before, so after reading about them, they seem kind of like doing new from visible.

All animations in gimp have multiple layers. Since you said you grouped them, I'm assuming you made them into layer groups. The layers in groups act as one layer.

Can you post a screen shot of your layers?

I'm not understanding about your groups. When you use the Playback animation feature, you get no animation at all?

I don't know how you would export separate images from layers. Perhaps someone else can help you with that.

Do your layers look like this below. The lower ones are regular layers, The ones above are group layers.
Which ones apply to what you are doing?
If they are like the ones below, they will play in animation. The group layers would be several layers inside those group folders, which will not play as animation

:ninja

Since you say you have your layers grouped and your layers are too many to post an image, I'm posting a small example of what I think you are talking about.

This screen shot shows 4 layers that are grouped. They will not play as an animation because they are grouped and the four layers in the group are treated as one layer.

Before they were grouped, the colored circles could be played as an animation.

You don't need to group your layers/frames to playback animations.
Layers in layer groups cannot be individual frames.
Layer groups were implemented as a step toward non-destructive image editing in GIMP, look at them as a tool which allows you to change any layer with the possibility to revert that change at any moment later on (for the simple layer undo operations will be lost in the next GIMP session or reloading your image). Layer Groups in GIMP is still in development, in later versions layer masks will be added to layer groups, etc.

Yes that's the problem the grouped layer couldn't play as animation which create a big mess for a matter of 3 sec animation..

k1te, do you know of a way a layer can be removed from a group aside from cutting and pasting it? If there is no way to do that, I hope they implement a way.

Check out LayerGroups Subsystem It allows exporting individual layers in layer groups as external image files (png, jpg etc.) After that you can open them again as layers.

If you want a bit more control over layers have a look at the AnimStack script. It's three scripts in one, Pack linked layers, Copy linked layers and Unpack layer group. If I understand you correctly, it seems Unpack layer group might help in your situation.

AnimStack is rather for advanced users, IMO. I was going to suggest it too, but figured it would lead to even more confusion.

AnimStack's layer group tools are for everyone though ;) You don't need to know anything about AnimStack to use those. I intended to release them as a separate script, but I'm quite lazy.
