I recently came across this site here registry.gimp/node/97 and was hoping for the photo effects to work. I downloaded them and installed them as is.. But when i tried to open the file, it told me the file type was invalid. I use Gimp 2.6 and run on Windows 7. Any help is appreciated here.

You have not to "open" the file but to move as it is in ...supposing you are using 7 or vista C : Users/yourname/.gimp/scripts (in xp would be instead C ocuments and Settings/yourname/.gimp/scripts )
you may have noticed ANOTHER gimp folder in "Program Files" but i don't refer to that

Anyway the script you want to install is a bit more complex of usual and require 2 steps :

1) open the zip , move the scm file where i just told you
2) in the zip you should see also a folder called "presets" ..or called "gimpressionist"with inside a folder called" presets"
In any case move that "presets" folder and all what inside in C : Users/yourname/.gimp/gimpressionist, (move the whole "presets" folder not only what inside )

Usually only the scm file is needed , in this peculiar case that " presets" are needed

It still did not work. The file types are in invalid. It's just not working properly.

There is a list of photo effects here in this link. Is this the same one you are using?

I have not checked the first link out yet. Does the first link have similar effects to the second link posted? The second link is the one i' am having issues with. Everytime I open the file with Gimp..I get this is unknown file type.

Maybe someone here can compile a photo effect script for you. I don't have it or I would post it here.

I get errors with both scripts (Gimp 2.8.4), so your not alone. I've compared the scripts code, they are almost the same with very few differences. I can get them to work in Gimp but not consistently. I also know they are installed in the proper folders. I'm sure the scripts are potentially good, I think they just need someone with a good eye for scripting to check them out and give them some TLC.

i use the conditional because that is not a single script but more then 2 dozens of scripts bundled together and i had no patience to try that all

anyway i did try the first dozens and all works

I never wrote to open the file with gimp !! you should not open the file with gimp

you should
1) install as i explained
2 ) to USE the script, gimp should be open and you should look in the gimp image windows for the FILTERS menu
In the filter menu, if you followed my step you will see PhotoEffects with several submenu, ech corresponding to a different effect, chose what you wish and click THERE to start the script

Has anyone used these in gimp-2.8? I had them back when 2.8 came out and I had to remove them on the account that I kept getting errors in my terminal when I ran gimp.

Molly i just told you that work in gimp 2.8 in 32 as in 64 bit in windows as on linux

AT LEAST THE COPY I ATTACHED IN MY PREVIOUS MESSAGE IN THE ZIP DOES WORK !

The FX foundry version didn't worked because the lost preset, if you install both script and preset will work (at least will work if do not have a crappy clone of the same script already installed )

Again are so many scripts included as submenu of PhotoEffect ,may even be 1 with something to fix , but as far i could test most works as a charme

That i posted install directly in Filters/Photoeffect, it could be modified /updated by someone here on GC not sure from where i get

Anyway does work and once installed is in Filters/PhotoEffect

I download the file and put it into the scripts folder. Then, I unzip the folder. I place the presets in the presets folder as described. I open the file with Gimp. This is the error i receive, Opening 'C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\scripts\photoeffect\photoeffect\ev_iccii_photoeffects_2_8.scm' failed: Unknown file type Still nothing shows up in Gimp either.

The version that works is the one posted here by PhotoComix.
The Photo Effects SCM file is called,
ev_iccii_photoeffects_2_8.scm

These two from the GIMP Plugin Registry are the ones that give errors.
ev_iccii_photoeffects_246c.zip containing ev_iccii_photoeffects_246.scm
and
photo-effects_20.zip containing ev_iccii_photoeffects.scm

I downloaded that one from PhotoComix too and still received the same error from it.

Do you have the presets from that zip in the right folder?
[user]\.gimp-2.8\gimpressionist\Presets

and removed the other versions of Photo Effects?
