No timetable for realization, NPD tool is one of 4 featured GIMP projects of GSoC 2013.
If (or when) completed, NPD is supposed to replace outdated 100 yrs old iWarp plugin.
If all goes well, cage transform tool will have become obsolete too (despite its baby age).

In this video NPD tool is given a shot alongside PS's Puppet Warp.
At 2:35 (if you got that far) - Krita's Free Transform Tool.
Cool tool, no?

P.S. And what in the world has happened with inserting/ embedding videos?
Doesn't work!!!!!!! I tried EVERY damn option - all GC is showing is bloody bbcode and url link!

This n point transform tool looks promising, but like all the transform tool in Gimp, they resemble the kind of transformation that is seen during the Krita 2.7 transformation tool demo, which show a lot of unwanted distortion. This is why I seldom us these tools, but the purposed n point deformation/puppet warp of the CS6 demo looked most like what I would want in a transformation tool. With little to no unwanted distortion of the rope, when given it's positioning.

Looks like the video has been posted after all, no? :hehe

Your embed works for me K1Te. I just wish the fluidity would have been more like how PS does it. Wish they had this feature in CS5 (since I do have that version but no plans on getting any version higher). lol

:)

Thank you Odin for fixing the problem for me :)
I think NPD tool is doing pretty slow (compared to Puppet Warp) but the precision is quite good. Do not forget it's still WIP.
When properly coded and ported to GEGL (yes, this part will be a must) this tool will be awesome.
I don't know what principles it utilizes but it definitely beats Krita's FTT. Did you see that flat-warped edges?

@Wallace Real-time distortion is no problem, the end result is a still image, not an animation.

@Lyle Thanks for the vid, Lyle. I was under impression that PS CS5 had this tool in Edit->Puppet Warp. No?

Not sure exactly since I've not played with it at all (GIMPer I am) but thought there was a difference between the puppet warp and the version that came with CS6 (though I could be wrong). Still, I only use PS for RAW processing which is rare since I don't take many captures with my Leica. lol

:)

I've been Gimping for 10+ years now, I understand this concept ...

What I'm saying is, that the tools provided by Gimp for doing transformations, look similar to the results of the Krita transformation tool, as demonstrated in the video. Along with it's unwanted distortion left behind, hence the "flat-warped edges".
The purposed n point deformation/puppet warp of the CS6 look really nice.

I want this. I don't even know why I want this yet, but I know I feel the tingle of it in my bones. I dislike iwarp with a passion that borders on religious opposition. Mainly because I can't see the layer underneath to guesstimate where it's supposed to end up. Whatever 'it' is. This NPD would be an amazing addition to gimp.

The comparison between NPD and iwarp is night & day and to me, the iwarp guesstimation-factor is huge.
NPD would be a great addition to Gimp's tool set, making iwarp and cage-transform obsolete.

The only problem with NPD tool that I've noticed was blending of overlapping portions of the rope, making it look flat.
But we haven't seen (not been shown) the end results, so i wouldn't jump to conclusions yet.
PS's warp tool makes overlapped rope look right after masking (obviously).
Same masking could be easily done in GIMP.
Tool isn't even half way finished. Student's project.

Ah... Yes I see, still a great proposal nonetheless. :bigthup

It will be nice to finally be able to mirror a car correctly.
If this warp tool, and the new foreground select tool for transparency in pixels are finished for Gimp-2.10, i will be very happy indeed. :)

@ Lyle - Puppet warp is similar in CS5.
