Hi,
I am new to Gimp2 and have an image on my website that I want to change.

I only have the final jpg file that I have attached.

On this image, it says the word "Webinar" to change that, I guess I would need need to replicate the color and go over the word to effectively "rub it out" and then make the text and place it.

Which tools should I use ? Do I need to add layers etc. ?

Any guidance much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Gimp Chat.
You can use "Change Image" to create a GIMP gradient from the button. Then use that gradient on linear to fill the area of the button. Get it here attached.


Unzip to the desktop or a new folder on the desktop and double left click the little pencil icon to open the welcome window.

When the window opens click the welcome window and the program will open. Open the image in it and create the gradient by drawing on the image. Example.


Then just click the little floppy drive icon to save the gradient.
Open GIMP and load the new gradient. Make sure it's set to "linear"
Open your target image you want to change.
Create a new layer with a name like new button or something like that on top.
Make the new top layer active. Use the free select tool to select the button area you want to fill with the gradient.
Using the gradient tool create the new gradient fill over the old button within that selection.
Then create your text and use the perspective tool to get the correct angle and depth.

I made the gradient, but you lost me when you said
"Open GIMP and load the new gradient."

How do I "load the new gradient." ?

i watched a youtube video about it and they said to just copy files into the
directory called gradients under Program Files->Gimp2->share->2.0->gradients

Well i didn't have a sub-directory gradients, so I created it and copied the
.ggr files into it.

Now I have restarted Gimp. ( is that what you meant by "load the gradient" ?

Now, I don't know how to continue - how would I apply that gradient to the button ?

You better put the gradients in user/.gimp-2.8/gradients.

This is without the gradient because it takes 5 seconds to make from the image itself.

1. Select gradient
2. Pick foreground color from top of the yellow button, and background color from bottom edge of the button (marked with red lines)
3. Gradient: FG to BG, RGB. I had it on HSV clockwise accidentally but that works too.

Create new layer and make a selection like in pic, with a free selection tool.
Drag from top, to bottom bit inclined. Might take few tries. I use different technique myself with these kind of things but this should do it.
Attached my result if you want to use or check it out, but you should of course make it yourself.

Changed a text years ago. Just change make the text area the same colour again as the background then do the same font if you wish with the different text.

Sorry about that. I should have told you to save the gradient to your /USERNAME/.gimp-2.8/gradients folder. Then just refresh gradients if GIMP is already open OR start GIMP. In the gradient dialog window select the new gradient you need.IF your gradient dialog window IS NOT open go to Windows>Dockable Dialogs and select the one for gradients. It will open for you. Then select the new gradient from the gradients in that window.
In you TOOLBOX is the GRADIENT tool. Click the gradient icon to open its options (double click it to OPEN the tool Options dialog window if it isn't open already). Be sure to select "LINEAR" for direction.
I had to use a bit of an awkward angle to apply the gradient over the button area. Also i assume it will be helpful to use Change Image to create your own gradients in the future. It is an excellent little program created just for creating GIMP (ggr) gradients.
IF you prefer you can just use the XCF i provided and change the text layer to your own. Though the new button looks a little bright in the center to me.

Thanks. It is a bit of a go around but you do get a new gradient maker out of the deal. So all is not lost!

Ok - Today I am gonna try and get it done.

I donno if my set up is different from normal - it is a recent install and I don't have

a Gimp2/gradients .

The structure is Program Files/ GIMP 2/share/gimp/2.0/gradients and the others


EDIT:: OK yes- under Users->David->.gimp-2.8->gradients , does exist

So I copied the button.ggr into that folder as well.

Gimp doesn't appear t be seem to picking up that Button gradient

So I'll try the other method.

You have to refresh gradients or restart GIMP. Either of these two methods will place the new gradient in the window for selection.

Do you have a solution to this ?

OK - I managed to detach the gradient box and press that update button ... but alas the Button gradient wasn't added.

And I had restarted Gimp after putting the files into the folders.

Just in case it can be useful in a similar case: move the bar to the right (there is an option for placing the windows app bar at top, bottom, right, left side; right click on the bar and choose setting)

I have applied the a gradient

and created another layer called words and I am using the Text tool.

I have typed - but how do I twist it so it lays on the button ?

In the toolbox select the perspective tool.

Once you have you text layer you need to rotate that layer until it is in the right position. Dont forget to highlight the layer you want to rotate. Either the tool (My icon looks like a pie/chart), or go to layer > transform > arbitrary rotatation

Dont merge it together yet!

If it doesn't look right you may want to use the perspective tool to warp it into place

Just using the perspective tool should be enough. Because you can place the corner handles anywhere you like. This will auto-magically rotate the text for you while using perspective on the text.
