I'm not sure if this has been covered elsewhere, but is there any way to minimize GIMP from slowing to a crawl when there's many layers in an image (about 10+)?

Save often comes to mind.

Just thought of one more, lower Maximum Undo Memory in Preferences.

Yup, I've know better and still get bit by that one

The problem is when you have many layers in an image, you are using the pre-determined memory cap set by Gimp. You're going to have to raise this cap to keep the program from slowing down. I talk about it in this gimp video tutorial.

If that doesn't work, there is also a bug in Gimp 2.8 that causes the program to run sluggishly on some computers when color management is turned on. Try turning that off by clicking edit>>>preferences>>>color management>>>set the mode of operation to "no color management."

I already had 10,000 MB set aside for GIMP (I have 16GB RAM) and I've encountered this behavior before in earlier versions. I'll see if upping the RAM further helps. Also, what is the purpose of color management? And are there any significant side effects to it being off?

Color management is really only useful if designing in a specific color workspace and other wise useless for the general population.
