video tutorial.If that doesn't work, there is also a bug in Gimp 2.8 that causes the program to run sluggishly on some computers when color management is turned on. Try turning that off by clicking edit>>>preferences>>>color management>>>set the mode of operation to "no color management."

I already had 10,000 MB set aside for GIMP (I have 16GB RAM) and I've encountered this behavior before in earlier versions. I'll see if upping the RAM further helps. Also, what is the purpose of color management? And are there any significant side effects to it being off?
