where to share large files

You guys are all so clever with computers, so I am hoping someone can help me find a way to upload a large (4.6 GB) video file so others can download it. I have been trying to upload to my google drive, but it just won't go, while small graphics files upload fine. It is a disk image .dmg file, copied off of a homemade DVD that I have, it copies easily to other DVDs. Macbook pro running Mountain Lion, Safari

How long would that be for? Have you thought of YouTube? I have seen things on there for 4 hours and longer even. It may take awhile to upload but I think you can keep things private if you want to on there.

When you upload a video, by default it’s set as a “Public” video, which means that anybody can view it. You can easily change the privacy settings while you’re uploading the video in the “Privacy Settings” section. Or, if you’ve already uploaded the video, you can change the privacy settings by following the steps below:

Visit your Video Manager.
Find the video you’d like to change, then click the Edit button.
In the “Privacy Settings” drop-down menu, select Public, Unlisted, or, Private.
Click Save changes.

That is a large file for sharing.

Can you just convert to .avi, .mkv or some other streaming format and upload to YouTube or similar video sharing site?

You can split a large file into smaller parts packaging it in a known format (7z, zip, rar). I use PeaZip on Linux, but I think it is not available for Mac. Perhaps you can find an alternative:

Anyway I think as GnuTux said earlier, "rip" the DVD I think is the best option. Encoding it to x264 (h264) and mkv or mp4 container (I prefer mkv), you will get good quality in small size. You can use in Mac the OpenSource software "Handbrake" I think:

One thing to check before uploading such a biggie is your upload bandwidth. If you are on ADSL, your upload rate is around 100KB/s, so 4.6GB is 46000 seconds (about 13 hours)... If you are on cable or fiber things may be better.

yikes, I am on dsl, and it's not a fast one, either. I think I will be sending out a ripped DVD, lol! If my try at uploading to google drive had shown any progress at all after an hour, I would have just let it go all night, but even after that much time it still shows no progress at all. I am going to check out youtube, but I never thought they allowed that large of a file. I have no idea how to break it into smaller vids, and don't want it to be a small window.

I'd go with YAFU's recommendation of Handbrake. Both links he provided for help should walk you through the process. The resulting file size will be much more manageable. :bigthup

If you wanted to use 7-zip of zip, there is an option to break the file into xx MB files. The person at the other end would use the program to join the files on decode to the original file.

Youtube has 10 hour videos repeating the same song like nyan cat, I think if you made a private video to youtube it would work fine...just take a while to upload. :>

I made a CD and mailed it, lol. I was going to try Minbox but my internet service isn't all that good.
