Btw - I own the domains gimpscript.com & gimpscripts.com. If anyone has any ideas on how utilize them, let me know. When I purchased those domains, I had the idea to create a website that would compete with the GIMP registry because the registry sucked heavy at that time. It was a horribly disorganized site full of outdated junk that didn't work. It's better now. ;)

One person can only do so much though and sometimes I'm more ambitious than time allows. I also have a short attention span and lose interest in one thing, in favor of the the next new thing that stokes my fire.

Hey Tux how about turning one of those domains into a test bed for Gimp scripts?
I know flamingtext.com uses the gimp tools and scm scripts, in fact i have a php install for net-fu.
The interface software for creating logos and sig tags online.
I wonder if the same could be done for a online gimp interface that tests scripts and plug-ins before you install them on your machine?

Would be a whole new adventure. =)

Not to mention you would need to develop the php scripting software probably.
That would be a challenge.

Just an idea.

I recall a project called WIMP which was suppose to be GIMP online, but believe it just died. Below's the link. :)

There is also sumo paint here -
http://www.sumopaint.com/home/

What i mean though is a place to upload a new exe, scm file,or Python script, and open it in that online interface.Test it to see what it does and what it does not do.Keep it (install through the interface), or scrap it (delete it from the server, or perhaps drop it into a already uploaded bin for all users).

A user logs in to their own personal account
The user selects which type of script they will be testing (SCM,PY, or EXE, and possibly JAR).
The interface reloads for that type, and pops up an uploader.
After the user browses for their file, and selects open, the software browses through all uploaded script directories for the file name.If the file isn't found the upload resumes. If the file is found the interface reloads and pops up a window telling the user the file is already installed and available for testing.Would you like to test it now?
Then the user selects yes and the test resumes.
The php software takes over from there utilizing gimp online. The script is installed online, and the software actually launches the script dialog if any.
The interface looks just like your Gimp Image Window (single mode), with everything available in a menu drop down list.Optional layers, layer modes, text, and colors. You would only need two brushes (one soft one hard).
Optional brush size, gradient. That would be the easy part though. The hard part would be the coding. =P

Net-fu can run scm's online and exe them.
I do not see why the same couldn't be done for plug-ins or other scripts.

Wouldn't it be cool though?
You dl a new script and instead of launching it in Gimp hoping it get's along nicely with all your other files, you could upload or test it via A GUI Tester Online. (GUITO) ... pronounced Ghetto.

Those are interesting ideas and something to consider. It certainly sounds like a non-trivial undertaking and I see a potential for some real security concerns. Also, compiled plug-ins are different for each flavor of GIMP (Linux, Windows, MAC) so that too would be an issue.

One of the domains could be, as you initially intended, a well-organized (titled listings, tags?) storehouse of scripts (at least scripts from GC), maybe with more explanations and graphics to help decide if you really want that particular one. There could also be install directions for different platforms, etc. One of the problems I have when looking for a certain effect is ... how to find it or something similar. It would be great if the "repositories" could have hot links from this site. It sounds like a lot of work, but I'm sure everyone here would help with what they could.

@GnuTux

that was also the reason why i started my resource pages on deviantart.
Now the registry works even if so many good scripts and plugin are not listed there

A Gimp web app may be cool but hard to implement.
At least i saw several willing to do it, but none had success

If i get some other idea i will post here..

To put this (Gimp web app) to simple terms, some people look at Gimp as a free alternative to PhotoShop, and in my opinion Sumo Paint tops all web based image editing programs so far, to date. I'd like to see a web based version of Gimp however it wouldn't be an easy task, and you'd be looking for some really good, and serious web developers.

I personally would rather use Sumo Paint over the gimp web app, because I don't see it being "exactly" like gimp with brushes to import, scripts, plugins, etc: etc: that I love so much, and I've used sumo paint as a web based image editor, and that's one thing that won't change, but my overall favorite image editing program is Gimp. (of course I do more than image editing, but you get my point)

Sumo Paint is highly advanced like Gimp, but I don't see a Gimp web app beating it anytime soon (at least in my point of view, and how I look at things)

Regarding to the main topic, I agree gimpscripts.com could be a great site where people who develop scripts, and get help, critique, etc: on their script, and make it better, fix bugs, etc: etc: pretty much a big help of an online community for Gimp scripts.

That's not a bad idea either 2-ton. A list of all the scripts with their uses and install directions.
Link to each one on the registry
Maybe a few image examples for each script? No security issues that way - no need to log-in
I would be more than happy to help design it Tux. I could use Web Builder 7.5.1 and create a
nice looking interface for the site in no time.Possibly even i Flash slide-show for the image sets.

It definitely would be helpful to the Gimp community.

If you want my help i am there. =)

Yes, I like that idea. The site could be a scripting resource with links, tuts and such. There is also no reason there can't be multiple locations on the net to DL GIMP scripts. There are hundreds of places to DL java scripts. Anyone know of a good open source package that manages and organizes uploads?

I've fooled with Sumo paint a few times, I'm not much on online applications but I do wish gimp had a symmetry tool like that.

Online apps are a pretty cool concept but not really the direction I'd like to go. I was thinking along the same lines as 2ton, where it would be more of a scripting resource and script repository site. It would still be a pretty big undertaking and would require a group effort.

Not too hard to install the one from energy scripts...just edit the configure script -
There is a readme file for this here.
http://simply-signage.com/scriptuploads/README.txt

Here is what it looks like - of course you can edit the index to suit your needs.

Thanks for the effort, Rod. I was referring more to a content management system, where files are uploaded with descriptions and organized in some fashion (say by category), including some kind of authentication system (registered user/password).

This is a very common kind of thing and I'm sure there must be several open source packages available to do this. I'd prefer not to re-invent the wheel, unless necessary. ;) I've seen a a mod for phpBB called "filebase" that did this exact kind of thing but I'm not sure the status of it presently.

I would really like a stand alone system that doesn't require phpBB. If you (or anyone else) could keep and eye out for something like that, it would be cool. I'll try to find something too but last time I looked, I didn't find anything suitable. I probably wasn't looking in the right place, though. :cool

Sorry Tux i thought you just wanted to be the one to upload the script and plug-in files.
I think if i were going to run something like that i , and maybe a few trusted others would have access to uploading scripts.
That way i could test them - create a few test images - a discription of install procedure - upload it all as a zip file.
Then have some sort of entry like Wordpress to add it to the site posts quickly.

Or are you talking about a place writers or developers of scripts can post their new ones?

Maybe a javascript style if you don't want to use MySQL databases for it or PHP.
I'll keep an eyeball peeled for one though.

I found a free opensource uploader that works very nicely, but it needs a MySQL database to work.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/theuplo ... p/download
Working demo -
http://simply-signage.com/upleng/index.php
It has many options though-here are some screen shots

Actual screenshot - (you can set the amount of files to be uploaded at one time)
I have mine set to 5.

Some administrative screenshots-

Pretty manageable but like i said MySQL database driven.Free though. :)
